11-UNDER-PAR TOURNAMENT TOTAL KEEPS BARRETT ATOP LEADER BOARD
Altomare maintains lead in Girls Division

MIDLOTHIAN, Va.-Patrick Barrett of Pinehurst, N.C., carded a 33-35-68 Wednesday to claim a 4-stroke lead heading into the final round of the AJGA Richmond Junior at Independence. Brittany Altomare of Shrewsbury, Mass., maintained her first-round lead by carding even-par 72.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA, the largest Association of its kind, has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 50 states and 30 foreign countries.

In the Boys Division, a birdie on No. 4 set the standard for Barrett's 4-under-par round that put him at an 11-under-par 133 tournament total.

“I always relax when I am under par because I know I can give some back and still be all right,” Barrett said, who carded six birdies on the day.

Barrett missed a short putt for par on No. 11, which inspired him to pick up his game.

“I had two bogeys in a row on Nos. 11 and 12, which fired me up,” Barrett said, who birdied three of his six last holes. “It was good because after a bogey I concentrate on playing better.”

Tied for second in the Boys Division with tournament total 137s are Vincent Nadeau of Edmond, Okla., and Alexander Sitompul of Bradenton, Fla. In fourth with a 138 tournament total is Alex Boyd of Augusta, Ga., and tied for fifth after the second round is Garland Green of Tazewell, Va., and Andrew Kay of Pittsford, N.Y., with tournament total 140s.

In the Girls Division, Altomare carded an even-par 72 for the day and felt she could have fired a lower score had a few more putts dropped.

“My putter was working well, but some of my putts were just hanging on the edge,” Altomare said, who had four putts lip out. “They would just burn the edge and stop short.”

Despite some unlucky breaks on the green, Altomare made a key birdie putt on No. 11 to bring her back to par.

“I hit an 8-iron to eight feet from the flagstick and birdied the hole,” Altomare said, who made three birdies on the day. “It was the one putt that went in.”

Three strokes behind Altomare with a tournament total 147 in the Girls Division is Christina Gray of Tampa, Fla., and in third is Amber Littman of Stoney Creek, N.C., with a tournament total 148.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. More than 160 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 300 wins. AJGA alumni include Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Mike Weir, Charles Howell III, Jim Furyk, Grace Park, Cristie Kerr, Candie Kung and Paula Creamer.

The final round of the AJGA Richmond Junior at Independence will be held Thursday, July 13, with tee times beginning at 7:00 a.m. off the No. 1 tee.
