MONAS AND COYLE SHARE FIRST ROUND LEAD AT 2-OVER-PAR
Tough conditions take their toll on contestants at Red Tail Golf Club
AVON, Ohio Kent Monas of Perry, Ohio, and Michael Coyle of Powell, Ohio, put together 2-over-par 74s to share the lead after a cold and windy first round at the Medicus Preseason Junior at Red Tail.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Red Tail is being held at Red Tail Golf Club in Avon, Ohio. Part of the Medicus Preseason/Postseason Junior Series, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Red Tail is a 36-hole stroke play event and consists of 84 boys, ages 12-18. The players hail from 12 states and Canada. The par-72 golf course is playing to 6,513 yards.
Monas, who started the day on No. 10, opened with a double bogey and followed that up with a bogey on No. 11. He then proceeded to play the next 16 holes at 1-under-par.
I played smart, said Monas. I only hit my driver four or five times to keep myself in play.
Coyle, who began the day on No. 1, led off with a bogey on his way to a front-nine 39. He followed that with a 1-under-par 35 on the back-nine to earn a share of the first-round lead.
I've played in qualifiers before, but never an actual tournament, said Coyle. My goal is to shoot 74 or better tomorrow, and hopefully that will be good enough to win.
Payne Gniewek of Trenton, Mich., is alone in third after shooting an opening-round 75. Luke Sherrod of Knoxville, Tenn., is alone in fourth with an opening-round 76. Scott Schuitema of Muskegon, Mich., and Drew Davidson of Canton, Ohio are tied for fifth with opening-round 77s. Jarryd Lentz of Monroe, Ohio, Ryan Davis of Salem, Va., Michael Sudzina of Greenwood, Ind., Patrick Kirby of Paris, Ontario, and Josh Bamberger of Waterloo, Ontario, are all tied for seventh with opening-round 78s.
