WEAVER LEADS THE WAY IN MOBILE
Thirteen qualify for tournament at Magnolia Grove Golf Club

MOBILE, Ala. — Phillip Weaver of Tuscaloosa, Ala., medaled at the Srixon Qualifier Thursday at Magnolia Grove Golf Club — Falls Course in Mobile, Ala. His low round of 1-under-par 71 was good enough to give him a one-stroke lead over the field.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Srixon Qualifier for the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior was conducted at Magnolia Grove Golf Club — Falls Course. The qualifier field featured 43 boys, ages 12-18, from 14 states. Thirteen boys qualified for the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior, which begins Saturday on the Falls and Crossings courses at Magnolia Grove Golf Club.

Weaver played a solid round of golf on Thursday to qualify for the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior. He began his round on the par-5 No. 7 with a birdie. He then finished the rest of his round with one birdie and one bogey to finish at 1-under-par. The overnight rain slowed down the greens and made the course play a little longer.

“Luckily, I was able to hit a lot of fairways,” said the 17-year-old. “If the ball stayed in the fairway, you could score decent because the rough was so long and difficult to play out of.”

Weaver's best finish this season is a tie for eighth at the Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic and he hopes to improve upon that this week. He will have to face tough competition from the tournament field as well as the other qualifiers. Those who also qualified and will be playing in the event include Ryan Sirman of Tyler, Texas, Matt Nagy of Buena Vista, Ga., Blake Driskell of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Beck Miller of Houston, Jonathan Randolph of Brandon, Miss., Michael Chapin of Roswell, Ga., Bud Cauley of Jacksonville, Fla., Peter Rombca of North Prairie, Wis., Shane Rhatigan of Alpharetta, Ga., Austyn Karle of Scottsdale, Ariz., Bennett Klaus of Edmond, Okla., and Darren Chapman of Destin, Fla.

In lieu of playing in this week's event, Matthew Krembel of Shalimar, Fla., Phillip Choi of Orlando, Fla., Sam Ransom of Atlanta., Ga., Clinton Shepard of West Monroe, La., and Zach Robinson of Pensacola, Fla., all accepted a tournament exemption as part of the AJGA's Option Out Policy.
