WARD, DO LEAD IN WILDCAT GOLF/WICHITA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Do finishes with a tournament low 3-under-par 68 in first round

WICHITA, Kan. — Christopher Ward, 17, of McKinney, Texas, and Brianna Do, 15, of Lakewood, Calif., topped the boys' and girls' leaderboards Wednesday at the Wildcat Golf/Wichita Junior Championship on the par-71 South Course of Crestview Country Club in Wichita.

The Wildcat Golf/Wichita Junior Championship is a 54-hole tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Crestview Country Club in Wichita. The 99-player field boasts juniors from 23 states and Canada. Six Rolex Junior All-Americans are participating in the tournament.

Ward, finishing the first round with a 2-under-par 69, leads the Boys Division by one stroke going into Thursday's second round. Do, finishing with a tournament low of 3-under-par 68, built a four-stroke lead in the Girls Division.

Making birdies on Nos. 4, 7 and 13, Ward shot a 2-under-par 34 on the front 9 and an even-par 35 on the back 9 to finish the round at 2-under-par. He credited solid putting and accurate tee shots for his leading score.

“I played better today than my last tournament,” Ward said. “But I only hit nine greens, I usually hit 13 or 14.”

Tied for second in the Boys Division with scores of 1-under-par 70 are Wichita native Zach Cleland, who earned entry to the tournament through the Monday qualifier, Jason Schulte of Kansas City, Mo., and Kevin Tway of Edmond, Okla. Rounding out the top five, tied for fifth with scores of even-par 71 are Dalton Owens of Mt. Vernon, Mo., Spencer Alefs of Wichita, Kyle Spencer of Sapulpa, Okla., and Jordan Cook of Edmond, Okla.

Do hit 10 of 14 fairways and made birdie on No. 3 for a 1-under-par 35 for the front nine and made birdies on holes 11 and 15 to finish the round with a 2-under-par 33 on the back. Do said she will look to improve her putting, but is otherwise happy with her play.

“Everything just connected,” Do said. “Maybe I'll keep it consistent and make it in the top five.”

Tied for second place after the first round was Jennie Arseneault of Grinnell, Iowa, and Alexandrea Schulte of Broken Arrow, Okla., at 2-over-par 73.
