August 27-30, 2001
JANANGELO CAPS SIZZLING SUMMER WITH
WIN AT TUCKER ANTHONY
Stegmaier holds on to win Boys Division
BERNARDSTON, Mass. - Elizabeth Janangelo of
West Hartford, Conn., punctuated one of the best years
in recent AJGA history by recording her fifth win of
the season Thursday at the AJGA Tucker Anthony Junior.
Another Connecticut native took home the Boys Division
title as Brett Stegmaier staved off the remainder of
the field at Crumpin-Fox Club.
The 13th annual AJGA Tucker Anthony Junior, conducted
by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 84
players representing 20 states and the District of Columbia.
All New England states were represented, led by 23 competitors
from Massachusetts.
The 17-year-old Janangelo cruised to a 12-shot win
by carding a 1-under-par 71, the lowest round recorded
in the Girls Division all week. Her win completes a
season that saw her win four other AJGA events in just
six starts, including major titles at the Polo Golf
Junior Classic and the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls
National Championship. When the Polo Golf Junior All-America
teams are announced this fall, Janangelo is sure to
be a frontrunner for Player-of-the-Year honors.
"Almost anything I set out to accomplish I did,
and it will push me to do even better next year,"
said Janangelo, who heads back to West Hartford for
her senior year of high school Friday. "This season
gave me great confidence and will definitely help me
down the road."
She entered Thursday's final round with an eight-shot
lead and quickly expanded it. After missing the first
green, she hit 14 in a row, coupling two birdies with
12 pars during the stretch. All Janangelo left in doubt
Thursday was her margin of victory.
"I knew that eight shots would be enough, but
I didn't want it to shrink to five or four shots because
then I risked losing my momentum," Janangelo noted.
Jeehae Lee (80-77-74-231) of Andover, Mass., took second-place
honors, while Mary Ellen Grzebien (76-80-81-237) of
Saunderstown, R.I., took third in her final AJGA event
before heading off to school at Northwestern this fall.
In the Boys Division, Stegmaier, of Madison, Conn.,
finished strong to capture his first career AJGA title.
After slipping several shots over par on the first dozen
holes, Stegmaier steadied himself by saving par on the
13th hole with an up-and-down from 60 yards out. He
followed it up with a birdie on the par-5 14th hole.
"I knew on the 14th tee that five pars would get
the job done," said the 18-year-old Stegmaier,
who shot rounds of 72-72-77-221. "The birdie was
key to help me solidify my lead."
The win concludes a season for Stegmaier that including
several other top-10 finishes in national events, but
getting the win fulfills a goal of his.
"I wanted to win an event this year, and I knew
I was playing well enough coming into this week,"
he said.
Marco Poccia (71-77-77-225) of Gansevoort, N.Y., captured
second while Thomas Feldman (71-78-77-226) of Washington,
D.C., and Derek Hurwitch (72-75-79-226) of Longmeadow,
Mass., tied for third. First-round co-leader Tony Dibitetto
(69-80-78-227) of Rochester, N.Y., rounded out the top
five.
