AJGA COMPAQ JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
AT TROPHY LAKE
Trophy Lake Golf and Casting
Port Orchard, Wash.
July 16-19, 2001
MOORE'S 69 GIVES HIM FIRST-ROUND
BOYS DIVISION LEAD
Creamer shoots 73 to lead in Girls Division
PORT ORCHARD, Wash. - Ryan Moore of Puyallup,
Wash., fired a 3-under-par 69 to take the first-round
lead in the Boys Division at the AJGA Compaq Junior
Championship at Trophy Lake. Paula Creamer of Pleasanton,
Calif., shot a 73 to take the opening-round lead in
the Girls Division.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association,
the third-annual AJGA Compaq Junior Championship at
Trophy Lake includes an 84-player field. Of the 84,
more than 40 Washingtonians are represented along with
10 states and Canada.
Moore recorded nine totals of 35 and 34 on his way
to only the third score recorded in the 60's in the
history of the tournament. Moore's round included an
eagle on the par-5, 547-yard No. 7 after a 7-iron from
190-yards set him up for an easy putt.
Moore credited his putter for the low score, including
a long par-saving putt on No. 8.
"I rolled the putter real well today," said
Moore. "I saved myself a few times today with the
putter and the putt on eight really kept my momentum
going from the eagle on seven.
"I hit the ball real well and was able to keep
it in the fairways. With all of the wind, the course
was not playing easy today."
Joining Moore atop the Boys Division leaderboard after
the first round are Luke Johnson, Federal Way, Wash.,
Sean Packer of Sumner, Wash., Johan Willhoite of Palm
Desert, Calif., Mike Zefkeles of Medina, Wash., and
Matthew Shin of Cerritos, Calif., all at 72.
In the Girls Division, Creamer made 13 pars in her
round of 73, placing her two-shots ahead of her nearest
competition.
"I hit my driver well and hit a lot of greens
today," said Creamer. "I wasn't hitting it
close on a lot of greens which prevented me from making
birdies, but I made pars which is what the game of golf
is about.
"I wasn't real sharp today, but hopefully I will
comeback tomorrow and hit it closer to the flags."
Rounding out the top three of the Girls Division are
Paige Mackenzie of Yakima, Wash., and Seiko Onoue of
La Habra, Calif., at 75.
Second-round action begins Wednesday with tee times
running from 6:30-8:27 a.m. off of the No. 1 and 10
tees.
