SEVEN BOYS, ONE GIRL FILL FINAL SPOTS FOR AJGA SAND BARRENS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

SWAINTON, N.J. -- Of the 100 players attempting to qualify for this year's AJGA Sand Barrens Junior Championship, seven boys and one girl emerged Sunday to take the final spots in the tournament field. Now in its third year, the event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, will feature 90 of the nation's top junior golfers.

John Sawin of Haverford, Pa., and Jeff Osberg of Chester Springs, Pa., both carded even-par 72 to take home co-medalist honors in the Boys Division. Jenny Suh of Fairfax, Va., fired a three-over 75 to claim the only available spot in the Girls Division.

Sawin, who did not take his driver out of his bag all day on his way to shooting 36-36--72, felt prepared for the competition he'll meet Tuesday.

"This is a course of control," Sawin said. "I want to win and I now know I can play this course well. I know it's not quite the same, but if I can do it once, why not do it again?"

Osberg, Sawin's fellow medalist, also found the key to victory and elected to keep the driver in the bag. He only used his twice.

"Seventy-two should be a good score all week," Osberg said. "I was pretty pumped when I came in with the score that I had. If I can just play like I did today, I'll be fine."

Jenny Suh's 37-38--75 easily won the Girls Division open slot. She will compete in a division stacked with talent, including Polo Golf Junior All-Americans Elizabeth Janangelo of West Hartford, Conn., Mary Ellen Grzebien of Saunderstown, R.I., and Kristen White of Doylestown, Pa. Each captured at least one AJGA title last season.

"I didn't even think about today as a qualifier," Suh said. "I just focused on winning. I told myself that if I play well, I can win the qualifier and maybe the whole thing."

The five other boys that round out the remaining division openings include Ryan Owens of Ocean City, N.J., and Billy Stewart of Devon, Pa., at 74, and Steve Kittrell of Moorestown, N.J., Alex Brueggemann of Bel Air, Md., and Mike Lebow of Royersford, Pa., all at 75.

The third annual AJGA Sand Barrens Junior Championship will feature five Polo Golf Junior All-Americans and 23 juniors from New Jersey. The 54-hole event will take place June 12-14.

First-round action begins Tuesday at 7 a.m. at Sand Barrens Golf Club. For more information, call AJGA tournament headquarters at (609) 465-3929.
