AJGA LEGENDARY HEADWEAR SAN DIEGO
JUNIOR
The Auld Course
Chula Vista, California
August 13-16, 2001
CHAMPIONS LEAD THROUGHOUT TO GARNER
WINS IN SAN DIEGO
Lenny Park and Allison Martin claim respective divisions
CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Lenny Park of Rowland
Heights, Calif., carded a final-round 2-under-par 70
and Allison Martin of Bakersfield, Calif., fired a 3-under-par
69 as the two cruised to convincing victories at the
AJGA Legendary Headwear San Diego Junior.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association at the par-72 Auld Course, featured
84 juniors, ages 13-18, representing seven states including
68 Californians.
Park, who entered the day with a four shot lead, came
out of the gate quickly with birdies on the first two
holes. After knocking in a 20-foot putt for birdie on
No. 1, the 18-year-old drained a 15-footer on No. 2
to further his lead.
"It was nice to start off with a pair of birdies,"
Park said. "I was able to relax a little and play
my own game."
After making the turn at 1-under-par 35, Park notched
another birdie on the par-4, 353-yard 10th hole before
finishing at 1-under-par on the back for an 11-under-par
tournament total of 67-68-70--205.
Kyle Gentry of Carmel, Calif., and David Yoon of Irvine,
Calif., made it interesting as the two finished with
rounds of 68 and 69 respectively to tie for second at
8-under-par 208. Park held only a two shot lead heading
into No. 18, before sealing the victory with his fifth
birdie of the day.
"I was a little nervous coming into No. 18,"
Park said. "I thought I had a bigger lead, but
I didn't let up and still went for it and was able to
make birdie."
Rounding out the top five in a three-way tie for fourth
were Bryson Young of Reno, Nev., Breene Murphy of Los
Alamitos, Calif., and Tyler Ley of Santa Barbara, Calif.,
at 212.
In the Girls Division, Martin posted rounds of 69-70-69--208
to claim her third AJGA title this year. Martin came
into the day with a three shot lead over Walailak Satarak
of Paramount, Calif., before birdies on Nos. 2 and 3
extended her lead to five shots.
"I got off to a really good start and that gave
me a lot of confidence," Martin said. "It
took some of the pressure off and I knew that if I kept
playing consistent that I would be all right."
Martin made the turn at 2-under-par 34 before playing
the back nine in 1-under-par fashion en route to a final
round 3-under-par 69.
"I tried to pretend that it was just another round,"
said Martin who posted victories at the AJGA Ashworth
Junior Classic at Quail Ranch and the AJGA ClubCorp
Junior at Mission Hills earlier this summer. "I
wanted to come out and at least shoot par and not worry
about what my competitors were doing.
"My game is really progressing and I've been able
to have more consistency," Martin said in reference
to her three victories. "The key to winning tournaments
is being consistent."
Satarak finished in a tie for second with Jane Park
of La Crescenta, Calif., at 218.
