NINE BOYS, TWO GIRLS QUALIFY FOR AJGA
HENRY-GRIFFITTS ROME JUNIOR CLASSIC

ADAIRSVILLE, Ga.-- Eleven spots were filled for the AJGA Henry-Griffitts Rome Junior Classic in the Pepsi Qualifier Series presented by ClubCorp on Sunday at The General at Barnsley. In the Boys Division, Justin Cowart and Joe Scheffres claimed medalist honors with an even-par 72. Vicki Yi and Esther Gweon took medalist honors in the Girls Division with rounds of 76.

The Pepsi Series Qualifier presented by ClubCorp featured 92 players from 17 states and Canada. Included in the field were 31 players from Georgia.

Cowart of Ellabell, Ga., and Scheffres from Rockville, Md., had nearly-identical rounds while claiming medalist honors. Cowart managed four birdies to offset two bogeys and a double-bogey.

"I was 1-under-par until my last hole (No. 4)," Cowart said. "I played very solid today until my last hole which kind of dampened my round. But overall, I was very pleased with my round."

The 16-year-old is coming off a third-place showing at the Rice Planters Amateur in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and hopes he can continue to play well this week.

"If I can avoid silly mistakes, I should be all right," Cowart added. "I am really looking forward to playing this week."

Scheffres had three birdies in his round. He was 2-under-par with three holes to play, before double-bogeying No. 18, a 422-yard par-four.

"I hit my irons close all day," Scheffres said. "I kept it in the fairway, and just had a really solid round."

The 17-year-old is also coming off his highest finish of the year, a ninth-place showing at AJGA Marsh Junior at Bethpage State Park.

"That finish gave me a lot of confidence coming into this qualifier," Scheffres added. "I know if I can keep hitting it the way I am and make some putts, I should do pretty well in the tournament."

Cowart and Scheffres will be joined in the tournament field by Chris Rice of Charlotte, N.C., Patrick McShane of Rome, Ga., and Jonathan Henderson of Mobile, Ala., at 1-over-par 73. Skip Perry of Atlanta and Mason McKnight of Augusta, Ga., qualified with 2-over-par 74s. Luke Morrison of Atlanta and Micheal Park of LaCrescenta, Calif., qualified for the tournament via playoff at 3-over-par 75.

In the Girls Division, Yi and Gweon shared medalist honors at 4-over-par 76.

Yi, a native of Fayetteville, Ga., will compete in her second AJGA tournament ever, after playing a steady round that featured two birdies and 10 pars.

"I played very well today," Yi said. "Everything just came together today, because I had been struggling with the way I was playing."

The 13-year-old Yi came into this qualifier with a more relaxed attitude.

"I wasn't really even thinking about making it," Yi added. "I just wanted to come out and experience what was going on. There was no pressure on me and I played well."

Gweon, a Charlotte, N.C., native, will play in her third AJGA tournament after a similar round to Yi's round. She also recorded two birdies and 10 pars.

"I hit my drives well and made a lot of putts," Gweon said. "I also avoided trouble, which you need to do on this course."

The Henry-Griffitts Rome Junior Classic, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, starts Tuesday morning at 7:30 at Coosa Country Club in Rome, Georgia. The field features 99 players from 17 states. Included in the field are two Polo Golf Junior All-Americans and 22 players from Georgia.
