WOOD SECURES TOURNAMENT WIN IN FINAL
ROUND
Puntawong seals second AJGA victory in Boys Division
ROME, Ga.-May Wood of Signal Mountain, Tenn.,
birdied the 364-yard, par-4 No. 16 to card a final round
75 for a tournament total 227, one stroke ahead of Tampa,
Fla., native, Mallory Code. In the Boys Division, Chanin
Puntawong of Bradenton, Fla., tallied a 1-over-par 73
for a 7-under-par 209.
The Henry-Griffitts Rome Junior Classic, conducted
by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 99
players from 17 states, including 37 competitors from
Georgia.
Wood entered Thursday's action tied with Code at 8-over-par
152. Wood and Code, who played all three rounds together,
played even until No. 16 where Wood's 15-foot birdie
putt gave her a one-shot lead heading into the final
two holes where she held on for the win.
"That hole was the turning point in the round,"
Wood said. "I got chills down my back as I watched
that putt fall."
Wood had three birdies and six bogeys to help her win
her first ever AJGA victory.
"I'm ecstatic to win this tournament," the
17-year-old said. "It is a great tournament to
put on my resume and it will be one that I will remember
for a long time."
Code carded a final round 76 to take runner-up position.
Whitney Sylvan of Columbia, S.C., was third with rounds
of 79-79-72. Her 72 was the day's low and it catapulted
her from seventh to third place.
In the Boys Division, Puntawong carded three birdies
en route to his final round 73, four strokes ahead of
his nearest competitor.
"I didn't knock down the putts that I had earlier
in the week," the 14-year-old said. "But I
really wanted to keep things simple and not make a lot
of mistakes."
Puntawong has won two of the three AJGA events that
he has played. His first victory came at the AJGA Compaq
Junior All-Star Series at Cimarron in June.
"This win means so much more because I'm playing
in a bigger and better field," Puntawong said.
"This is going to help me get into more tournaments
which is only going to make me a better player."
Four strokes back in second place was Will Dottley
of Greenville, Miss., who carded a final round even-par
72 for a tournament total 213. Bryan Jones of Atlanta
also carded a 72 for 2-under-par 214, which was good
for third place. Ryan Blaum of Coral Gables, Fla., and
Chris Rogers of Franklin, Tenn., tied for fourth place
at 1-under-par 215. Blaum had a final round 2-under-par
70 and Rogers shot an even-par 70.
