TWELVE BOYS, FOUR GIRLS QUALIFY FOR FINAL SPOTS IN THE AJGA ASHWORTH JUNIOR CLASSIC AT QUAIL RANCH

MORENO VALLEY, Calif. - Attempting to qualify for the American Junior Golf Association's Ashworth Junior Classic at Quail Ranch, 17 girls and 70 boys teed off at Quail Ranch Golf Club Sunday afternoon.

When all was said and done, Sommer Scholl of Riverside, Calif., shot the Girls Division low score, carding a 3-over-par 75 to claim medalist honors and a spot in her first AJGA tournament. Kenny Kim of Cerritos, Calif., Jared Tarlow of Calabasas, Calif., and Chris Pederson of Thousand Oaks, Calif., shared medalist honors in the Boys Division, shooting even-par 72.

The 14-year-old Scholl enjoyed her first AJGA experience. "I liked how well the tournament was organized," Scholl said. "I hope to keep hitting my drives straight and keep my focus throughout the week."

The remaining Girls Division qualifying spots for the AJGA Ashworth Junior Classic at Quail Ranch, which begins Wednesday, were filled by Minnie Choi of Fountain Valley, Calif., Moah Chang of Los Angeles, and Jamie Oliver of Los Alamitos, Calif.

In the Boys Division, 15-year-old Kim carded both a birdie and an eagle on the back nine to earn a share of the top qualifier spot.

"I'm really, really happy to qualify for my first regular tournament," Kim said. "My game has improved a lot since last year, and I'm hitting the ball a lot farther."

Filling the other qualifying spots were nine other Californians: Trevor Branon of Los Gatos; Ryan Kohler of San Diego; Matthew Shin of Cerritos; Neno Boonyaplanun of Irvine; Drew Kravis of Calabasas; Daniel Horning of Palm Desert; Kyle Shelly of San Diego; Jeff Ditullio of Thousand Oaks; and Chris Heintz of Brea.

The first round of the AJGA Ashworth Junior Classic at Quail Ranch begins Wednesday, May 30, with the first tee time set for 7 a.m. at Quail Ranch Golf Club.
