TWO TIE FOR THE TITLE AT KINGWOOD
Braden and Fiegelman finish at 152
KINGWOOD, Texas - Travis Braden
of Magnolia, Texas, shot a 74 at Kingwood Country
Club's Island Course Sunday to tie David Fiegelman
for medalist honors at the AJGA Preseason Junior at
Kingwood. With the win, the two earn three exemptions
into AJGA events this summer.
The 36-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association, featured 84 boys ages 13-18 from 20
states, including 50 Texans. The tournament, the last
of three AJGA preseason events, was open to AJGA members
who did not compete in any AJGA tournaments in 2000.
Braden fired rounds of 78-74-152 to tie for top honors.
"I wasn't swinging well yesterday," said
Braden, 17. "Today I stuck it out and played every
shot the best I could. It did not matter if it was for
par or double bogey, I just stuck it out and tried to
make all my putts."
Fiegelman carded rounds of 75-77-152 to tie for first-place.
After laying up to the island green on the par-5 18th,
he found his ball against the bridge and had to punch
out to secure the tie.
"Today I was hitting the ball everywhere,"
said Fiegelman, 16, who was one-stroke off the lead
after the first round. "I had to rely on my short
game and putting. I don't think I missed anything under
five feet. I didn't hit many greens, I just got up and
down."
Philip Sanchez of The Woodlands, Texas, placed third
with a two-day total 153, while Martin Piller of Duncanville,
Texas, was fourth with a 154. Rounding out the top five
were Kyle Allen of Timpson, Texas, and Ben Fuqua of
South Pasadena, Calif., at 157.
The top-five finishers earned two exemptions into the
next two AJGA events they properly apply for, while
the top 15 earned one exemption.
