DUNCAN SHATTERS TOURNAMENT RECORD
AT PING MYRTLE BEACH
Cho claims first AJGA victory with dramatic playoff
putt
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-Brian Duncan of Greenville,
S.C., continued his red-hot play with a final-round
3-under-par 69 and cruised to a seven-shot victory at
the AJGA Ping Myrtle Beach Junior Classic. In the Girls
Division, Mickey Cho of Wesley Chapel, Fla., won on
the first playoff hole, edging Andrea Vander Lende of
Longwood, Fla., and Ali Kicklighter of Deland, Fla.,
to claim her first AJGA victory.
The 54-hole event was conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association at the Myrtlewood Golf Club, PineHills
Course, and featured 123 players, ages 13-18, representing
21 states, Canada, England and Puerto Rico. Past champions
include Beth Bauer (1995-96) and Charles Howell (1995).
Duncan, a Clemson University signee, shot rounds of
65-66-69-200 to breeze to the victory. The 18-year-old
used six birdies in the final-round and finished with
19 birdies in the three-day tournament to win his first
AJGA event. Duncan's tournament total of 16-under-par
200 shattered the tournament record of 13-under par
set last year by Chan Song Wonglukiet of Bradenton,
Fla.
"It hasn't really hit me yet," Duncan said.
"I'm very pleased to play the way I did this week
and to get my first win like that."
Duncan began the day with a bogey on No. 2, before
carding birdies on Nos. 3 and 5 to make the turn at
1-under-par. After another bogey on No. 11 dropped him
to even-par on his round, he birdied four of the next
five holes to move to 4-under-par for the day.
"I still struggled with my driver today,"
Duncan said. "I hit only 5-of-14 fairways again,
but my short game was good today, and that really picked
me up on the back nine."
Duncan's red-hot play began a month ago when he won
the South Carolina State Title on the same PineHills
Course. Two weeks ago, he placed second at the AJGA
Henry-Griffitts Junior at Furman, and last week, he
reached the semifinals of the South Carolina Men's Match
Play Tournament.
"I'm playing very well lately," Duncan commented.
"Hopefully I can keep it going the rest of the
summer and then next fall."
Hochul Kim of Clearwater, Fla., was second at 9-under-par
207 (75-68-64). Kim tied a tournament-record with a
64 today that included six birdies and an eagle. Kevin
Kisner of Aiken, S.C., was third at 7-under-par 209
on rounds of 70-72-67. Jeff Overton of Evansville, Ind.,
Brett Bergeron of Laplace, La., and Tom Lefebvre of
Camp Lejeune, N.C., all shot 6-under-par 210 to tie
for fourth place.
In the Girls Division, Cho sank a 40-foot putt from
the fringe on the first hole of the sudden-death playoff
to garner her first AJGA victory.
"I just went for it," said an elated Cho
about the winning putt. "I wasn't going to lag
it up there, because Ali (Kicklighter) was close. I
wanted it to go in, and fortunately, it hit the stick
and went in.
"It feels great," said Cho about her first
win. "I thought that I had lost in regulation,
because they (Vander Lende and Kicklighter) had made
so many birdies. I was happy to get another chance.
I didn't expect to win."
The 18-year-old Cho sat five shots off the lead after
the first round, but responded with a second-round 3-under-par
69 to lead heading into the final-round.
"The scores were so close after the first round,
I was just hoping to get a top five finish," added
Cho. "I knew after the second round that I had
a chance to win."
Cho concluded the tournament with rounds of 76-69-75.
Kicklighter and Vander Lende tied for second with identical
rounds of 71-75-74.
