STOLTZ CAN'T DRIVE 55, BUT SHOOTS 68 TO LEAD BOYS
Kobayashi shoots 74 to top Girls Division

WINDSOR, Colo. - Drew Stoltz of Ft. Collins, Colo., didn't let a speeding ticket on his way to the golf course slow him down as he fired a 4-under-par 68 to lead the Boys Division after the opening round of the AJGA Marsico Funds Colorado Junior Roundup. In the tightly grouped Girls Division, Mayumi Kobayashi of Santa Monica, Calif., took the first-round-lead by carding a 74.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Marsico Funds Colorado Junior Roundup features 99 players representing 17 states. Included in this week's field of 13-18 year-old players are 36 Coloradoans.

Stoltz, whose warm-up time was cut significantly after being pulled over on his way to the golf course, rebounded quite nicely by making a 20-foot putt to birdie No. 1.

"I kind of had a rough morning," said Stoltz. "But the putt on No. 1 really gave me a lot of confidence with my putter. I have been hitting the ball real well all summer, but I haven't been able to put it all together. Today everything just clicked and I was able to get it going."

After No. 1, Stoltz would go on to birdie Holes No. 4, 9, 10, 14 and 15 on his way to a 34-34--68, giving him a tenuous 1-shot lead heading into Thursday's second round.

"There are a lot of birdies to be made on this course," said Stoltz. "You just have to try and make pars on the other holes and avoid making any big numbers."

Joining Stoltz atop the Boys Division leaderboard are Matthew Gutowski of Superior, Colo., at 69, Matthew Slovitt of Winnetka, Ill., and Ford Halbardier of Spring, Texas, at 70 and Aaron Goldberg of Encinitas, Calif., John Scott of Englewood, Colo., and Daniel Lim of Cupertino, Calif., at 71.

In the Girls Division, Kobayashi got off to a quick start with birdies on the first two holes, paving the way to a round of 37-37--74 and a 1-stroke opening round lead.

"The first two holes really gave me a lot of confidence and I played pretty steady the rest of the way," said the 14-year-old Kobayashi. "My putter was pretty good today and I was getting my irons to go where I wanted them to.

"I just need to hit the fairways off of the tees. When I didn't hit greens was when I tended to struggle."

Rounding out the top three places in the Girls Division are Ashley Forbes of La Quinta, Calif., at 75 and Courtney Mahon of Topeka, Kan., Jill Phillips of Auburn, Wash., and Alyssa Otero of Santa Fe, N.M., at 76.

Second-round action begins Thursday with tee times running from 7:00-11:48 a.m. off of the No. 1 tee.
