PING LANGDON FARMS JUNIOR CLASSIC
Langdon Farms Golf Club
Aurora, Oregon
July 2-5, 2001
TWO FIRST-TIME CHAMPS CROWNED
Olson and Mackenzie Take Two Different Routes to
Claim Victory
AURORA, Ore. - Erik Olson of Renton, Wash.,
and Paige Mackenzie of Yakima, Wash., were crowned champion
in their respective divisions at the PING Langdon Farms
Junior Classic. Olson's final-round 2-over-par 73 was
just enough to grind-out a first place finish in the
tightly contested Boys Division. In the Girls Division,
Mackenzie strolled to victory with a final-round 3-over-par
74 to win by five strokes.
The PING Langdon Farms Junior Classic, conducted by
the American Junior Golf Association, featured 84 of
the nation's top junior golfers ages 13-18. Hosted by
Langdon Farms Golf Club, this week's field included
players from nine states and Canada, five of whom are
Polo Golf Junior All-Americans.
While both Olson and Mackenzie led at the end of the
two previous rounds, the path they took to the championship
was quite different.
Olson did not take sole possession of first place until
the back nine during the final round. He began the day
tied for the lead, and then trailed Sean Packer of Sumner,
Wash., by two at the turn before coming back to secure
victory with a tap-in par on the final hole of the tournament
to win by one stroke.
"That was the longest 8-inch putt of my life,"
Olson said of his final putt. "I didn't want to
think about what was going on. I just kept playing golf
and let everything work itself out."
Everything worked itself out great for Olson, especially
on the back nine. Packer's front-side 31 was followed
by a back-nine 44, opening the door for Olson. Olson
also fought off Michael Putnam of University Place,
Wash., and David Fern of Spokane, Wash., with tournament
totals of 214, defending champion Reid Rader of Kenmore,
Wash., at 215, and Joseph Kim of Laguna Niguel, Calif.,
and Packer at 216.
"I knew that I just needed to keep it going and
finish the round doing what I was doing," Olson
continued. "This gives me the confidence to know
that I can play with the best players in the nation."
Mackenzie's road to victory was a lot less stressful.
She led wire-to-wire with no serious challenge from
behind. Her 221 tournament total placed her five shots
ahead of Sung Lee of Tacoma, Wash. Defending champion
Hwanhee Lee of Cerritos, Calif., placed third with a
tournament total of 230.
Although she had a sizeable lead since the end of the
first round, Mackenzie, who will attend the University
of Washington in the fall, was put in the precarious
position of keeping it that way.
"I was holding my breath all day," Mackenzie
said. "I just kept telling myself to keep attacking.
This was a huge stepping stone for the rest of my summer
and as I go off to college."
Mackenzie was happy to get an AJGA victory under her
belt just as her junior career winds to an end.
"I've had leads before, but I always seem to throw
it away," she said. "But now, it feels like
all of my hard work has finally paid off. It's just
a mental relief that I was able to get through it."
AURORA, Ore. -- Final results from the PING LANGDON
FARMS JUNIOR CLASSIC conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association at Langdon Farms Golf Club. Par: 35-36--71.
