CAMPBELL FIRES 71 TO CLAIM MEDALIST
HONORS IN BOYS DIVISION Liao takes Girls Division honors with a 78
LOMPOC, Calif.-Peter Campbell of Encinitas,
Calif., carded a 1-under-par 71 to take medalist honors
in the Boys Division of the AJGA La Purisima Junior
Qualifier at La Purisima Golf Course Sunday. Ki-Shui
Liao of Alameda, Calif., fired a 78 to take medalist
honors in the Girls Division.
The 18-hole qualifier, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association, included 100 players representing
Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Washington, and 94 California
natives. Participants competed for nine spots in the
Boys Division and four spots in the Girls Division for
entry into the AJGA La Purisima Junior to be held Tuesday-Thursday
at La Purisima Golf Course.
The 16-year-old Campbell relied on putting and solid
ball striking during his round to post his 37-34--71.
He made a 10-footer to get up-and-down for bogey on
his first hole and hit a 9-iron two inches from the
hole from the fairway on No. 18 and tapped in for birdie.
"I have had some putting troubles lately,"
Campbell said. "I putted pretty well today, though.
I was a little intimidated looking at all the good players
on the range, but my confidence improved when I was
able to sink a few putts early in the round."
The qualifier was a new experience for Campbell, being
his first AJGA tournament.
"I didn't expect a lot going in," Campbell
said. "I just hope to play about the same the rest
of the week."
Also qualifying in the Boys Division were Paul Imondi
(38-34--72) of Tustin, Calif., Brandon Christianson
(37-36--73) of Valencia, Calif., Chris Pederson (36-37--73)
of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Andrew Price (35-39--74) of
Mission Viejo, Calif., Edward McGlasson (38-36--74)
of Orange, Calif., Michael Tran (38-37--75) of Laguna
Hills, Calif., and Carey Evans (35-40--75) of Woodland
Hills, Calif. With 30 minutes of daylight left, Louis
Bishop (38-38--76) of Murrieta, Calif., made a par on
the third playoff hole to qualify.
In the Girls Division, Liao, 13, used touch around
the greens and a little luck to shoot a round of 39-39--78.
She chipped in for birdie on No. 17, her last hole,
despite not being able to see the hole.
"I played a pretty solid round today," Liao
said. "This is my first AJGA tournament, and I
would like to play three more rounds like the way I
did today."
Also qualifying in the Girls Division were Martha Burkard
(36-43--79) of Alameda, Calif., and Julie Kim (41-38--79)
of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. Tara Chappell (43-39--82)
qualified by making a par on the second playoff hole.
