AJGA COMPAQ JUNIOR ALL-STAR CLASSIC
AT KISSIMMEE BAY
Kissimmee Bay Country Club
Kissimmee, Florida
July 9-11, 2001
BAIN SCORCHES KISSIMMEE FOR A 9-UNDER-PAR
133
Park wins Girls Division for first AJGA title
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Steven Bain of Lake Mary,
Fla., picked up where he left off Wednesday and fired
a final-round 4-under-par 67 to win the Boys Division
of the AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Kissimmee
Bay. In-Bee Park of Wellington, Fla., finished with
an even-par 142 to claim her first AJGA title in the
Girls Division.
The fourth-annual 36-hole event, conducted by the American
Junior Golf Association, featured 81 players, ages 13-15,
representing 19 states, Peru, Puerto Rico and Canada
with 33 Florida residents.
Bain, who lit up the course for a 5-under-par 66 in
Tuesday's first round, carded 14 pars and four birdies
en route to a final round 67 and a two-day total of
133. The 15-year old played his first six holes at even-par
before carding birdies on Nos. 7 and 9 to make the turn
at 2-under-par. After another birdie on the par-3, 163-yard
13th hole, Bain played the final five holes in 1-under-par
fashion to garner his first AJGA title.
"I played great," said Bain who tied for
eighth at this event last year. "I hit a lot of
greens and didn't make any bogeys which was my goal
coming into today. I played solid all around, but my
putting definitely was the key."
Will Osborne of Wichita Falls, Texas, finished in second
place at 139, tying Bain for the low final round at
67 after carding four birdies. James Minahan of Spring,
Texas, finished in third at 71-71-142 while James Sacheck
of Zionsville, Ind., Michael Birtel of New Orleans,
La., and Austin Wang of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.,
rounded out the top five at 3-over-par 145.
In the Girls Division, Park carded a final round 70
that included 13 pars and two birdies. Park entered
the final round tied for the lead with Whitney Sylvan
of Columbia, S.C. After making the turn at even-par
36, Park birdied Nos. 11 and 15 to finish at 1-under-par
and notch a four-stroke victory.
"I really putted well today," Park said.
"Yesterday, I wasn't putting very well, but I was
able to make a few putts today. It's nice to win my
first AJGA tournament. I still have a lot of practice
to do, but this is a nice start."
Sylvan finished in second at 72-74-146 while Erica
Gonzalez of Davie, Fla., was third at 75-74-149.
