AJGA COMPAQ JUNIOR ALL-STAR CLASSIC
AT KISSIMMEE BAY
Kissimmee Bay Country Club
Kissimmee, Florida
July 9-11, 2001
BAIN LIGHTS UP KISSIMMEE WITH A 66
Park and Sylvan lead Girls Division with 72s
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Steven Bain of Lake Mary,
Fla., leads the Boys Division of the AJGA Compaq Junior
All-Star Classic at Kissimmee Bay after firing a 5-under-par
66 Tuesday. Whitney Sylvan of Columbia, S.C., and In-Bee
Park of Wellington, Fla., are tied for the lead in the
Girls Division after each carded 1-over-par 72 in the
first round.
The fourth-annual 36-hole event, conducted by the American
Junior Golf Association, features 81 players, ages 13-15.
There are 19 states, Peru, Puerto Rico and Canada represented
with 33 Florida residents.
Bain, who is playing in this event for the third year,
carded his career low round with five birdies, an eagle
and two bogeys to shoot 35-31-66.
"My putting was really good," the 15-year-old
said. "I made everything I looked at."
Bain eagled the par-5 11th hole after hitting his 3-wood
to within three feet. He then went on to birdie the
last two holes, knocking in a 40-foot putt for birdie
on No. 17.
"I started making a lot of birdies after No. 11,"
he said. "I made a lot of 20-foot putts. I did
not play exceptionally well, I just made all my putts."
Four shots off the pace at 1-under-par 70 is Tyler
Rucarean of Gainesville, Fla. Rounding out the top-five
are James Minahan of Spring, Texas, at even-par 71 and
Will Osborne of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Michael Birtel
of New Orleans, La., at 72.
In the Girls Division, Sylvan and Park, who are tied
at 72, hold a two-stroke advantage over the rest of
the field heading into the final round.
Sylvan, 15, turned her day around after starting the
day at 4-over through six holes to shoot 39-33-72.
"I was not hitting fairways to begin with and
I was not getting any breaks," Sylvan said. "Things
started going my way after I birdied No. 8. I told myself
that I needed to turn it around if I still wanted to
be in the hunt tomorrow."
Sylvan birdied two of the last three holes by sinking
a 25-footer on No. 16 and knocking it within an inch
on No. 17.
Park finished the day with three birdies en route to
a 38-34-72 in her first AJGA event.
"I played a pretty consistent round," Park,
13, said. "My putting was bad and I definitely
need to work on that for tomorrow. My strength today
was my driver."
Haley Brown of Austin, Texas, is in third after carding
a 74.
Final-round action will take place Wednesday with tee
times running from 8 -10 a.m. off the first and 10th
tees.
