AJGA COMPAQ JUNIOR ALL-STAR CLASSIC
AT KINGWOOD
Kingwood Country Club - Island Course
Kingwood, Texas
June 25-27, 2001
LOWRY CLAIMS SECOND TITLE OF SUMMER
AT KINGWOOD WITH FINAL-ROUND 71
Niederkohr holds off competition to claim Girls
Division title
KINGWOOD, Texas-Randy Lowry of
Spring, Texas, claimed his second AJGA tournament championship
of the month Wednesday at the AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star
Classic at Kingwood after posting a tournament total
of 142. Holly Niederkohr of Marysville, Ohio, won the
Girls Division title with a two-day total of 17-over-par
163.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf
Association, the Compaq/David Leadbetter Junior All-Star
Series was created in 1998 to give 13-to-15-year-old
members more opportunities to play at the national level.
The field at the Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Kingwood
featured 91 golfers from 23 states, Canada and Guam.
Lowry, who last month won the Boys Division at the
Golfweek Chicago Junior, hit 16 greens in regulation
en route to carding his second round of 1-under-par
71 of the tournament. The 14-year-old used a conservative
approach in order to tame Kingwood Country Club's difficult
Island Course.
"I knew the course was tough," Lowry commented.
"So I never got too aggressive on my shots. I just
played to the center of the fairways to set up birdie
putts."
The Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Kingwood marks
the second championship of Lowry's young career. He
used Kingwood's lengthy par 5s to shave strokes off
his score.
"The par 5s were where I got most of my shots and
made up ground," said Lowry, who was 4-under on
par 5 holes this week.
Jake Creel of Dothan, Ala., Martin Piller of Duncanville,
Texas, and Kenny Palmer of Scottsdale, Ariz., shared
second after finishing at 4-over-par 148. Brent Pickrell
of Austin, Texas, took fifth at 6-over-par 150.
Fourteen-year-old Holly Niederkohr claimed her first
career AJGA title after carding a final-round 80 to
finish with a two-day total of 17-over-par 163. Niederkohr
cited the difficulty of the course in preventing her
from posting a lower score.
"I don't feel like I played my best," Niederkohr
said. "But I was glad to hold on and win today.
The AJGA is a big deal, any type of trophy here is very
nice."
Vanessa Brockett of Los Angeles won the Nabisco Oreo
Cookie Low Final Round award with a 4-over-par 77 Wednesday
to bring her tournament total to 166 and finish in second.
Natalia Godoy of Cypress, Texas, closed the tournament
in third with a score of 87-88--175.
