Overland Park, Kansas
August 6-9, 2001
SWEEPING OFF THE PLAINS AND INTO
THE LEAD IN K.C.
Je's 72 ties her with Rollins in Girls Division
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Michael Unger
of Edmond, Okla., fired a 3-under-par 69 Wednesday to
pull even in the Boys Division of the AJGA Marsh Kansas
City Junior with fellow Oklahoman and first-round leader
Ryan Henry of Broken Arrow. In the Girls Division, Dana
Je of Orlando, Fla., shot an even-par 72 to join first-round
leader Ashley Rollins of Austin, Texas, in a first-place
tie.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American
Junior Golf Association at the par-72 Milburn Country
Club, features 99 players representing 15 states and
includes 21 Kansas natives.
Unger, who shot an even-par 72 in the
opening round, birdied the last three holes to put himself
into a first place tie heading into Thursday's final
round.
"The back nine is the side where
you can shoot under-par," said Unger of his 33
on the second nine. "Holes 14 and in are birdie
holes, so you just have to keep making pars until you
get to those holes and then make some birdies. To stay
even going into 14 was huge.
"Yesterday I was in the woods a lot
and just trying to get it up and down. Today I kept
it in play, took advantage of the par 5's and played
a lot more aggressively."
Henry, who came into the day with a three-stroke
lead, shot a 35 on the front side before things started
to unravel.
"I just started thinking too much
on the back nine," said henry of his 4-over-par
back nine performance.
Henry blamed himself for looking at the
scoreboard at the turn and seeing Unger's 69 posted.
"I just have to go out and play golf
and I didn't do that today. It's frustrating to have
a chance to put some distance between myself and everyone
else, but I didn't do that and just need to play well
tomorrow."
Joining Unger and Henry at the top of
the Boys Division leaderboard are Brian Vahlberg of
Norman, Okla., at 143 and Barrett Martens of Platte
City, Mo., and Chris Mabry of Leawood, Kan., at 144.
Je's 72 was the low girls round of the
day and could have been lower with a few made putts.
"I could have played better,"
said Je. "I missed a lot of short putts, but I'm
happy with how I played today. It feels great to be
up at the top and I hope to do better tomorrow."
Rollins, who held a one-shot lead heading
into the day, grinded her way to a second-round 75 to
keep a share of the lead.
"I just wasn't putting the ball in
the fairway today," Rollins said. "Fortunately,
I salvaged some pars. That was just kind of the way
my day went."
Rollins has a simple strategy for herself
as she heads into the final day looking for her first
career AJGA victory.
"I just need to put it in the fairway,"
Rollins said. "You're going to do well if you can
just put it in the fairway because the hole seems to
open up for you when you do that."
Rounding out the top of the Girls Division
are Jennifer Tangthiphaboontana of Long Beach, Calif.,
and Stephanie Ruiz of Edmond, Okla., at 151, two-shots
off the lead.
Final-round action begins Thursday with
tee times running from 7:30 a.m.-12:09 p.m. off of the
No. 1 tee.
