AJGA JOHN DEERE CLASSIC JUNIOR
CHAMPIONSHIP
Glynn's Creek Golf Course
Long Grove, Iowa
August 14-17, 2001
CALKIN CAPTURES FIRST AJGA TITLE
AT THE JOHN DEERE CLASSIC JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Kurokawa leads wire-to-wire in the Girls Division
to claim title
LONG GROVE, Iowa-Mike Calkin of St. Charles,
Ill., fired a final round 3-under-par 69 to claim his
first career AJGA title at the inaugural AJGA John Deere
Classic Junior Championship. Elena Kurokawa of Redondo
Beach, Calif., shot a 4-over-par 76 to take top honors
in the Girls Division and grab her second career victory.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association, was being held at the par-72 Glynn's
Creek Golf Course. The field featured 99 of the top
junior golfers in the nation, representing 18 states.
Calkin entered the final round one shot behind leader
Darren Lundgren of Ballwin, Mo., but quickly grabbed
the lead with a birdie on the 365-yard, par-4 third
hole and extended his lead with a birdie on No. 7.
"I had the lead after the third hole," Calkin
said. "So I knew I had a chance to win if I finished
strong."
After a bogey on No. 8 dropped him into a tie for the
lead with Trent Leon of Dallas, Calkin responded with
a birdie on No. 9 and continued making birdies on the
back. After a chip-in birdie on No. 11, Calkin knocked
a gap wedge from 125 yards out to within inches of the
hole for a tap-in birdie and followed it with a 10-footer
for birdie on No. 14.
The 17-year-old finished with six birdies on the day
to finish the tournament with a 7-under-par 209, three
shots ahead of Leon and Mike Fiedler of Faribault, Minn.,
who carded the low round of the day with a 5-under-par
67.
"It feels great to win," Calkin said. "This
is the best I've ever played. Learning how to win is
huge. I really proved something to myself today and
this is the second straight week I've shot a final-round
69, so I have a lot of confidence right now."
Scott Seibert of Chesterfield, Mo., finished fourth
at 213 after a 2-under-par 70 to close the tournament.
Lundgren rounds out the top-5 at 68-71-75--214.
In the Girls Division, Elena Kurokawa led wire-to-wire
to claim a two-stroke victory over Alice Kim of Los
Angeles, Calif. Kurokawa entered the day with a four-stroke
lead of Kim, but bogeys on the first three holes trimmed
her lead to two shots. Kurokawa fought back on No. 5,
reaching the green with an 8-iron from 125 yards out
and draining an uphill 25-footer for birdie to regain
control.
"After the first three holes, I knew I needed
to start playing better and make some birdies,"
Kurokawa said. "After my birdie on No. 5, I was
able to relax and start hitting the ball better."
The 17-year-old rolled in a 10-footer on No. 10 for
her second birdie of the day and made par when she needed
to on No. 18 to seal the victory.
"I'm happy to get the win and get the chance to
play at Polo and Rolex," Kurokawa said. "It
was stressful to have the lead all week, but it feels
good to get the win."
Kim finished two shots back at 70-76-74--220 to take
runner-up honors. Taylor Leon of Dallas fired the low
round in the Girls Division with a 1-over-par 73 to
tie for third place with Jessica Castle of Plantation,
Fla.
