White maintains lead in Girls Division with 75

WETHERSFIELD, Conn.-Kellen Altman of Myrtle Beach, S.C., fired a 3-under-par 68 Wednesday to jump into the Boys Division lead at the AJGA Greater Hartford Jaycees Junior Classic. Kristen White of Doylestown, Pa., maintained her lead in the Girls Division by posting a second-round 75.

The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, features 99 players representing 17 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. Wethersfield Country Club is playing host to the tournament.

The 17-year-old Altman made a strong charge late in his round with birdies on Nos. 11, 14, 16 and 18 to post his 3-under 68 and move to 3-under-par for the tournament.

"I didn't miss anything that counted," Altman said. "I wanted to come out and play solid mentally and not give up any shots. The three-putt bogey on nine set me back a bit but the four birdies on the back nine more than made up for that hole. The putts just kept falling for me today."

Altman finished in a tie for 10th at the AJGA Henry-Griffitts Junior at Furman and in a tie for 12th at the AJGA PING Myrtle Beach Junior Classic earlier this year. He will try to improve on those finishes Thursday.

Mark Baldwin of Laconia, N.H., carded a 1-under 70 to jump into a tie for second at 140 with first-round leader Zack Amole of Denver, Pa. Baldwin birdied two of the first three holes and added a birdie on the 10th hole to finish the day at 2-under-par for the tournament while Amole made two birdies and three bogeys in his second round.

John Browndorf of Rumson, N.J., posted a 3-over 74 and stands in fourth at 1-over 143. Phillip Telliard of Riverside, Calif., and Dennis Gosier of Gansevoort, N.Y., enter the final round tied for fifth at 144.

In the Girls Division, White played through a rough start and used some concentration on the last two holes to maintain a two-stroke lead at 143.

"I'm disappointed with my score today but I'm proud of myself for not blowing up out there. I hit it in the water on 16 but still made bogey and I drained an 8-footer for par on 17 after hitting my tee shot in the deep rough on the left."

White looks to improve on third-place finishes at both the Lessing's AJGA Classic last week and the AJGA Indiana Junior Classic earlier this year.

Defending champion Elizabeth Janangelo of West Hartford, Conn., made three birdies in her round to shoot a 2-over 73 and stands in second place at 145. Sukjin Lee of Toms River, N.J., stands in third after carding an even-par 71.
