YOUNGSTER LOWRY DROPS A SECOND-ROUND 69 TO RETAIN LEAD IN CHICAGO
Park leads Girls Division heading into final round

WINNETKA, Ill. - Randy Lowry of Spring, Texas, fired his second consecutive under-par round to retain the lead after the second round of the AJGA Golfweek Chicago Junior and holds a four-stroke lead heading into the final round. Jane Park of La Crescenta, Calif., leads the Girls Division after carding a second-round 72.

The 54-hole event, which features 99 players including 50 Illinois natives, is being conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Winnetka Golf Club.

Lowry, who turned 14 in April and is the youngest player in the field, had 12 pars, four birdies and only two bogeys on the day. He began his round with a bogey on the first hole, before recovering with a birdie on No. 2. After back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8, Lowry made the turn at 2-under-par 33. After another birdie on the par-5, 500-yard 15th hole, Lowry, who placed third at two Compaq Junior All-Star Series events last year, finished the back nine in even-par fashion en route to a two-day total of 68-69-137.

"I know I have the game to play out here," Lowry said in reference to his age. "Today, I just came out with the same game plan as yesterday and tried to see if I could get some putts to drop and fortunately they did. I didn't hit it as well off the tee, but I was able to save par with good chipping and by making some good putts."

Trailing Lowry in second at 141 is Ryan Cochran of Paducah, Ky. After carding a first-round 73, Cochran stormed back with a 3-under-par 68. Cochran, who placed fifth at the Compaq Junior Classic at English Turn last year, finished the round with 11 pars and five birdies.

Michael Moir of Aberdeen, Scotland, is in third at 70-73--143 while Mike Calkin of St. Charles, Ill., is fourth at 70-74--144. Three players are tied for fifth at 3-over-par 145.

In the Girls Division, Park will look for her second career AJGA victory after winning the Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Eagle Ridge last year. The 14-year-old carded two birdies on the day en route to a 1-over-par 72 and a two-day total of 148. Park made the turn at even-par before shooting 1-over-par on the back nine.

"My putting was really a strong point for me today," Park said. "I was making most of my four-to-five footers and that was really key. I was also hitting my drives a lot straighter and hitting more fairways."

Winnetka native Alexis Wooster sits one stroke off the pace at 74-75--149 while first-round co-leader Mandi McConnell of Grand Blanc, Mich., is third at 72-80--152.
Final round action begins Friday with tee times running from 6:30-11:18 a.m. off the first tee.
