LAFONTAINE'S 69 GIVES HIM FIRST ROUND
BOYS DIVISION LEAD
Alice Kim leads Girls Division at 74
ESSEX, Ontario - Shawn Lafontaine of Cobourg,
Ontario, shot a 3-under par 69 Tuesday to take the lead
in the Boys Division of the AJGA Toldo Group Eastern
Canadian Junior. In the Girls Division, Alice Kim of
Los Angeles, carded a two-over par 74 to lead after
the opening round.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association,
The AJGA Toldo Group Eastern Canadian Junior features
85 players representing 14 states and three provinces.
Of the 85 players in the field, 43 hail from Canada.
Lafontaine played a solid all-around 18 holes on his
way to the first-round lead. Despite missing greens
on Nos. 3, 4 and 5, Lafontaine played the trio of holes
even-par. He was able to get up-and-down on all three
before making birdies on Nos. 6 and 7. Lafontaine then
made the turn and scorched the back nine with two birdies
and seven pars to end with a 69.
"My putting has been real solid lately,"
said Lafontaine, who is coming off of a third place
finish at the Onatrio Junior. "The greens here
really seem to suit me and I have a lot of confidence
putting the ball right now. Off the tee I didn't get
myself into any trouble, and from the fairways it's
easy to hit the greens."
Within two shots of Lafontaine in the Boys Division
sits a group of five players. Chris Stanko of Windsor,
Ontario, Colby Beckstrom of North Muskegon, Mich., Nick
Kenney of Etobicoke, Ontario, John Locke of Ashland,
Ohio and Steve Muir of London, Ontario, all are at 71.
In the Girls Division, Kim holds a slim opening-round
lead over Claire Lucey of Winnetka, Ill., who sits a
shot back at 75.
Kim bounced back from bogeying the first two holes
to shoot even-par over the remaining 16 holes, finishing
up with a 74.
"I had a rough start and I think that nervousness
may have kicked-in for me," said Kim of her first
couple of holes. "Making pars after that seemed
to settle me down a bit.
"I was strong off of the tee today and my putting
was better than it had been lately. I was able to put
a lot of my long putts close to the hole."
Joining Kim and Lucey atop the Girls Division leaderboard
is Julie Harder of Holland, Ohio, at 79.
Tuesday's first-round action also saw a hole-in-one.
Mike Gaffin of Kentwood, Mich., aced the 164-yard, No.
5, par 3 using a 7-iron.
Second-round action begins Wednesday with tee times
running from 7:30-9:27 a.m. off of the No. 1 and 10
tees.
