PARR IS GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN AT DEER
CREEK
Sadekar takes home Girls Division title
AJAX, Ontario -Andrew Parr of London, Ontario,
used a late eagle to avoid an eight-man playoff and
win the AJGA FutureLinks Junior at Deer Creek. Seema
Sadekar of Stouffville, Ontario, grabbed the Girls Division
title with a 233 total.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association and FutureLinks, was held at the Deer
Creek Golf & Country Estates, Ruby and Diamond courses.
This was the first year of partnership between the AJGA
- the United States' premier junior golf organization
- and FutureLinks - Canada's blossoming national junior
golf program. The field featured 99 players from Canada,
the United States and Bermuda, and included 65 players
from Ontario.
Parr's final-round 74 overcame a four-shot deficit
that he faced at the start of the round. On the fifth
hole, Parr cut into the deficit, setting up his lone
birdie by choking up on a pitching wedge from 120 yards
away and landing it within eight inches of the hole.
The 18-year-old continued to work for par until the
527-yard, par-5 16th hole. After his tee shot landed
in the right rough, Parr fired a 2-iron that rolled
from the fairway to 10 feet past the hole. Parr sank
the downhill, breaking putt, which gave him a two-shot
advantage.
"No. 16 was definitely a turning point,"
Parr said. "I started to make a lot of putts coming
in and that eagle putt was huge."
As it turns out, it was huge as Parr carried a valuable
three-shot lead heading to the 18th hole. After finding
trouble off the tee and again out of the fairway, Parr's
lead nearly evaporated. Faced with a six-foot putt for
the win, Parr drained it to prevent an eight-man playoff.
"I was pretty nervous at that point," Parr
said. "I tried to stick to my routine. I visualized
the putt and loosened the grip a little bit."
The putt rolled in to give Parr his first AJGA victory,
finishing at 72-73-74--219.
"I played well this week," Parr said. "The
course was very challenging but I hit the ball straight,
which is a must here.
D.J. Reeves of Mission Viejo, Calif.; Justin Bratkovich
of Hamilton, Ontario; Joshua Dean of Richmond Hill,
Ontario; Andrew Gallo of Thornhill, Ontario; Brad Moulton
of Orangeville, Ontario; Daniel Kreindler of Danville,
Calif., and Jesse Dixon of Ann Arbor, Mich., finished
one shot back at 220.
In the Girls Division, Sadekar held off Eom-Ji Park
of Vancouver, British Columbia, in a battle that came
down to the 511-yard, par-5 18th hole with Sadekar clinging
to a one-shot lead. Both hit their approach shots safely
to the green but each faced long putts for birdie. Sadekar
rolled her lag putt of 35 feet to within inches of the
flagstick for a tap-in par. Park needed to sink her
25-footer to force a sudden-death playoff, but it fell
five-feet short sealing Sadekar's first AJGA victory
in only her third appearance.
"It was a battle out there," said Sadekar,
who attends the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Bradenton,
Fla. "I tried not to focus on what she was doing
and, instead, I just tried to focus on my game."
Sadekar ends a three-week stretch of tournaments played
with two eighth-place finishes and a victory.
"I want to keep playing more AJGA events,"
said the 16-year-old. "My game is getting better
and I hope to be very competitive next year."
Park finished at 82-72-81--235 for runner-up honors.
Isabelle Gendreau of St-Georges Beauce, Quebec, took
home third place at 238.
