BLAKEFIELD SETS NEW TOURNAMENT RECORD
TO TAKE BOYS DIVISION TITLE AT AJGA HENRY-GRIFFITTS
BLUEGRASS JUNIOR INVITATIONAL
Turner holds on to win first career title with
final-round 71 in Girls Division
ASHLAND, Ky.-Mark Blakefield of
Maysville, Ky., set a new tournament record at the AJGA
Henry-Griffitts Bluegrass Junior Invitational Friday
with a 54-hole total of 6-under-par 204 to claim the
Boys Division title. Marci Turner of Tompkinsville,
Ky., shot 1-under-par on the front nine before finishing
at 71 to claim the title in the Girls Division with
a tournament total of 9-over-par 219.
The tournament, conducted by the American
Junior Golf Association, featured 120 golfers from 22
states and Canada. 31 Kentucky natives competed in the
20th edition of the 54-hole event.
In winning the AJGA Henry-Griffitts Bluegrass Junior
Invitational, Blakefield (73-65-66--204) and Turner
(76-72-71--219) join 1998 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year
Steve Flesch and two-time U.S. Women's Amateur champion
Vicki Goetze as champions of the event.
"I've been wanting to do this for a long time,"
Blakefield said about his first career AJGA victory.
"I've always wanted to win (an AJGA tournament),
especially in Kentucky. That makes it so much better."
Blakefield's 6-under-par tournament total was one shot
better than the old record carded by Mike Austin of
Ostrander, Ohio, in 1997.
The Kentucky native began both nines on fire, making
birdies on Nos. 1, 2 and 4 and birdie, eagle to start
the back, and then outlasted round two leader Cale Barr
(68-68-70--206) down the stretch. Barr shot 3-under-par
on the back nine to make a late push, yet was unable
to retake the lead as the round wore on. The 18-year-old
Blakefield sealed the win with a 20-foot putt for birdie
on the 400-yard par-4 18th hole.
"I knew he (Barr) would make a run sooner or later,"
the Kentucky signee said. "I was expecting it.
I just kept trying to make pars and make him come after
me. I was grinding for the whole day and after that
putt, I knew it was all over."
Barr, from Versailles, Ky., finished second at 4-under-par
with a final-round 70. Chris Halkowitz of Johnson City,
Tenn., shot 69 to join Jessie Mudd of Louisville, Ky.,
and Shawn Lafontaine of Cobourg, Ontario, in a tie for
third at 2-under-par 208.
Heading into the final two holes of the tournament,
Turner held a one-stroke lead in the Girls Division
over Whitney Wade of Glasgow, Ky., and Beth Marushak
of Northampton, Pa. She was able to hold off her challengers,
making par on holes 17 and 18.
"I knew I always had a chance," the left-handed
Turner said. "But to play so well the last two
days, that really meant a lot."
The 17th hole proved crucial for the eventual champion.
Turner hit her pitch shot from 30 yards to two feet
from the hole. She proceeded to make the putt and preserve
a one-stroke lead after watching Marushak sink a birdie
putt to go to 10-over-par for the tournament.
Wade and Marushak shared second with scores of 10-over-par
220.
The Henry-Griffitts Bluegrass Junior Invitational marks
the first AJGA tournament title for Turner, her previous
high finish was fifth at the TaylorMade-adidas Golf
Junior at Chateau Elan in April.
