BEERS TAKES AJGA AVILA JUNIOR CLASSIC VICTORY WITH 2-UNDER-PAR
70
Dickey blazes through field with 68 to earn
first AJGA victory
TAMPA, FLA. -Jackie Beers of Midlothian, Va.,
fired a 2-under-par 70 to win the Girls Division of
the AJGA Avila Junior Classic at the Avila Golf &
Country Club. In the Boys Division, James Dickey of
Pembroke Pines, Fla., shot a 4-under-par 68 and overcame
a four-stroke deficit.
The AJGA Avila Junior Classic at the Avila Golf &
Country Club, conducted by the American Junior Golf
Association, featured 84 players including nine Polo
Golf Junior All-Americans, ages 13-18, representing
15 states, Bermuda, Mexico and Japan.
Beers, who trailed Mallory Code of Tampa by two strokes
entering the final round, carded nines of 37-33 and
finished with a 1-under-par 215.
"I started really slow," the 17-year-old
said. "Fortunately, I was able to stick to my game
plan and stay patient. On this course you can't be anything
but patient.
"If you are going to be aggressive you have to
wait until the back nine."
Beers, whose first AJGA victory came in the Greater
Greensboro Chrysler Junior in June, had five birdies,
10 pars and three bogeys.
"This win is much better than my first,"
Beers said. "It was great to get that first win
under my belt, but when I looked at this field, I was
like 'Wow.' I knew I was going to have to step up my
game."
Code finished in second-place at 2-over-par 218 (70-73-75).
Nicole Melton of San Antonio, Texas, finished in third-place
at 6-over-par 222 (74-74-74).
In the Boys Division, Dickey shot nines of 33-35 with
five birdies, 12 pars and one bogey, to earn his first
ever AJGA victory.
"I just went out with the attitude to have fun,"
Dickey said. "I tried not to let my nerves get
a hold of me and just play my game."
After shooting a final round of 4-under-par 68, the
16-year-old had to wait at No. 18 and watch Marco Poccia
of Ganesevoort, N.Y. Poccia entered No. 18 1-under-par
and had a 15-foot putt for birdie.
"I thought I was going to lose my stomach until
I saw that the putt was short," Dickey said. "This
is the best feeling I have had during my junior golf
career.
"You know the AJGA has the best tournament field
anywhere. If you win one of these tournaments, you are
playing pretty well."
Poccia finished in second-place with a 1-under-par 215
(72-70-73). Jason Overton (69-79-69) of Palm Harbor,
Fla., and Alex Wilson (72-75-70) of Coral Gables, Fla.,
finished tied for third-place at 1-over-par 217. Chase
Baldwin (76-70-72) of Plant City, Fla., finished in
fifth place at 2-over-par 218.
