DESTEFANO USES A FRONT-SIDE 29 IN ABILENE TO TAKE A TWO-STROKE LEAD
Shin cards an ace to grab lead in the Girls Division

ABILENE, Texas-Brandon Destefano of Bryan, Texas, used a front-side 29 to secure the 36-hole lead at the AJGA Abilene Reporter-News Junior. The 16-year-old finished at 4-under-par 67 for a two-day 135 total. Cindy Shin of Coppell, Texas, carded a 2-under-par 69 to grab a two-stroke lead in the Girls Division.

The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, is being held at the par-71 Abilene Country Club. The field features 120 of the top junior golfers in the nation, representing 11 states and includes 102 Texans.

Destefano connected early with birdies on the first three holes. After another birdie on No. 6, the Bryan High School junior used a 4-iron to chip-in for eagle on the 521-yard, par-5 seventh hole. Destefano finished off the front nine with an eight-foot birdie putt on the par-4 ninth to make the turn at 7-under-par.

"I was putting really well, everything was right at the hole," said Destefano, who is competing in his second AJGA event.

Destefano steadily made par through the back nine before cooling off at the end to walk into the clubhouse with a personal best 4-under-par 67.

"Hopefully I'll maintain my lead tomorrow," Destefano said. "I need to continue to play well, and not make any mistakes towards the end."

Pete Pennington of Granbury, Texas, carded a 3-under-par 68 to sit two strokes back at 137. Tyler Kief of Kingwood, Texas, is alone in third place at 138. Shane Bacon of Marshall, Texas, and Jeremy Schoonover of Fort Worth, Texas, are tied for fourth place at 3-under-par 139.

Two-time defending champion Jeff Bell is 10 strokes back at 70-75--145.

In the Girls Division, Cindy Shin of Coppell, Texas, holed a 6-iron on the 150-yard, par-3 fourth hole en route to a 144 two-day total. It was her fifth career hole-in-one.

"I was really excited, but I had to try to keep concentrating on what I was doing," the 16-year-old said. "At that point, I wanted two more birdies to make up for my round yesterday."

Shin tallied birdies on Nos. 1, 14 and 16 to elevate her to the top spot heading into the final round tomorrow.

"I'm pretty satisfied with today," Shin said. "I need to play solid tomorrow, and avoid making mistakes in order for me to keep the lead."

Brenda Norris of Spring Branch, Texas, also carded a 69 to move into second place with a 146 total. The New Braunfels Canyon High School senior connected on six birdies to sit two strokes back of Shin.

First-round leader Kelley Louth of Victoria, Texas, is in third place at 5-over-par 147.

Final-round action for the AJGA Abilene Reporter-News Junior begins at 7:00 a.m. Thursday at Abilene Country Club. For more information regarding the AJGA Abilene Reporter-News Junior, please contact tournament headquarters at (915) 692-2586.
