SAULS FIRES 2-UNDER-PAR 70 TO LEAD QUALIFIER FIELD

Lawrence, Kuhn each shoot 76 to pace Girls Division

NEW ORLEANS – Ben Sauls of Baton Rouge, La., got the wheels rolling early and coasted through the rest of his round Sunday, shooting a 2-under-par 70 to take the Boys Division medalist honors in the Fore!Kids Junior at TPC of Louisiana Qualifier. Liebelei Lawrence of Bradenton, Fla., and Jamie Kuhn of Miami each turned in a 76 to top the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fore!Kids Junior at TPC of Louisiana Qualifier was held at Eastover Country Club. The juniors were competing for 14 spots (11 boys and 3 girls) in this week’s 54-hole tournament, which will feature 84 players, including four Rolex Junior All-Americans.

Sauls opened his round with a birdie at the par-3 sixth hole after throwing a 7-iron dart to within two feet of the hole.

“I got off to a pretty good start there,” Sauls said. “I was actually surprised at how close it was – it was almost kick-in range.”

Sauls also rolled in lengthy birdie putts at Nos. 13 and 17 to turn in a solid scorecard with three birdies and only one blemish, a bogey at No. 10.

“All of it was working pretty well for me,” Sauls said. “I was disappointed about my three-putt at No. 10, but I stole one at No. 13 with a long putt. Overall it was a pretty good round of golf.”

Jonathan Randolph of Brandon, Miss., and Reese McCauley of Parkland, Fla., each carded an even-par 72, and Reed Howard of Hilton Head, S.C., shot 73. Rounding out the boys qualifiers are Josh Materne of Bluewater Bay, Fla., Sebastian Casano of Phoenix, Ariz., Brent Herman of Metairie, La., Darren Chapman of Destin, Fla., William Gilchriest of Humble, Texas, Michael Birtel of New Orleans, Thomas Galloway of Covington, La., and Kellen Seligman of Hagerstown, Md.

Lawrence, who has signed a letter-of-intent to play golf at Vanderbilt University next season, said she was happy to earn a qualifying spot despite her play.

“I was hitting the ball all over the place,” Lawrence said. “In the beginning I was scrambling pretty well, then the wheels started coming off. I’ve been struggling and I came in here just trying to get a decent score.”

Kuhn joins Lawrence in the Fore!Kids Junior at TPC of Louisiana field, along with Abby Oberthier of Montgomery, Texas, who shot a 77 for the third and final qualifying spot in the Girls Division.
