This weekend sees the fourth annual AJGA Junior All-Star at Lost Springs presented by Visit Bentonville . The city of Bentonville continues to sponsor the event so we wanted to highlight one of the fun facts about the town: Bentonville, Arkansas, is home to Walmart.
Walmart was founded by Sam Walton based on his idea of great customer service and affordable prices. Walton opened his first store, Walton’s 5&10, in 1950 in downtown Bentonville. With the success of his first store, he opened the doors of the first Walmart in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. Today, Walmart has grown into a multi-billion-dollar company and has more than two million employees. Walmart currently has over 11,000 stores worldwide. Its mission stands to save people money to improve their standard of living.
This week, the AJGA staff was fortunate enough to visit the Walmart Museum in downtown Bentonville.
Walton’s 5&10 acts as the entrance to the museum. Guests enter and get the feeling of being in the very first Walmart. Old-fashioned candy and employee uniforms will bring you back in time. In the museum, guests can watch a feature video about Walton, view the timeline of Walmart that runs along the walls and even make their own Walmart nametag. The end of the museum takes you through an old-fashioned ice-cream parlor. Visitors can choose from many different flavors of ice cream and sundae options. The ice-cream parlor is a museum highlight for the AJGA staff and the residents of Bentonville.
What impacted the AJGA staff most was Walton’s 10 rules to building a better business. The rule that stuck out the most to us was, “Share your profits with your associates, and treat them as partners.”
We encourage families and spectators of this weekend’s event to check out downtown Bentonville and the Walmart museum. Admission is free and it only takes you a few minutes to get there from the course.
