CB&I Boys Championship at Carlton Woods receives seventh consecutive Junior-Am Fundraising Award

The CB&I Boys Championship at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas, won the American Junior Golf Association’s Junior-Am Fundraising Award for the seventh-consecutive year. The Junior-Am Fundraising Award honors a tournament committee that exceeds expectations through its Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament.

Each year, the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best individual hospitality, Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament, charitable giving and volunteer base. Awards are also given to the events with the highest media and social media participation. Finally, the AJGA recognizes the year’s most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and general manager, as well as the most improved event, best new event, best Junior All-Star tournament, best Invitational and overall tournament of the year. Tournament awards for the 2015 season will be presented on-site at 2016 tournaments.

In 2009, Chris Dernick took over as the tournament chairman for the event and brought it to The Club at Carlton Woods. In the seven years she has been at the lead, the tournament committee has raised more than $888,000 through its Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament, including $145,000 in 2015. In 2016, the Junior-Am fundraising is expected to eclipse $1 million.

Dernick, who has been involved with the AJGA since the mid-1990s when her children played, credits the tournament committee and the other Carlton Woods staff members for making the Junior-Am such a success.

“We are grateful to have long-time support from our sponsors and members at Carlton Woods.  The success is also the result of Gary Whitlock, our Fundraising Chairman's commitment and hard work in sustaining the support of past sponsors and finding new support each year for this event to raise the funds necessary to give back to the Wounded Warriors, The First Tee of Houston and the ACE Grant,” Dernick said.

The tournament provides unique benefits to the Junior-Am participants through tournament gifts and an overall high quality of service. In addition to having a successful Junior-Am, the tournament also provides the junior golfers and their families with the highest level of service and competition.

“We have an amazing tournament committee and the Carlton Woods staff and membership are all so supportive in hosting this event and providing a memorable experience for our junior competitors and their families,” Dernick said.

Dernick will receive the Junior-Am Fundraising Award at the 2016 CB&I / Simplify Boys Championship at Carlton Woods , scheduled for Feb. 12-15.

“The tournament committee for this event goes above and beyond each year to provide a great experience for everyone involved,” said AJGA Senior Regional Director South Central, Darren Nelson. “The AJGA is proud to partner with such an amazing committee and group of sponsors.”

As the AJGA’s longest-running boys-only event, CB&I / Simplify Boys Championship at Carlton Woods has an esteemed history with past champions such as Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth. The event also has accumulated 12 AJGA tournament awards including: Hospitality (2001, 2004 and 2014), Invitational of the Year (2009, 2011), Golf Professional of the Year (2013) and Junior-Am Fundraising (2009-15).
