The CB&I Boys Championship at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas, won the American Junior Golf Association Junior-Am Fundraising Award for the sixth consecutive year, and claimed its third Hospitality Award. The Junior-Am Fundraising Award honors a tournament committee that exceeds expectations through its Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament, while the Hospitality Award honors the tournament committee that creates a special tournament experience for juniors and families in attendance at the event.
Each year, the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best individual hospitality, Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament, charitable giving and volunteer base. Awards are also given to the events with the highest media and social media participation. Finally, the AJGA recognizes the year’s most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and general manager, as well as the most improved event, best new event, best Junior All-Star tournament, best Invitational and overall tournament of the year. Tournament awards for the 2014 season will be presented on-site at the 2015 tournament.
Since Chris Dernick took over as tournament chairman for the event and brought it to The Club at Carlton Woods in 2009, the tournament committee, including Fundraising Chairman Gary Whitlock, has raised more than $743,000, including $132,500 in 2014, through its Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament.
Dernick, who has been involved with the AJGA since the mid-1990s when her children played, credits the success of the Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament to the committee members and the overall experience they provide to sponsors.
“The focus of this event is not just on junior golf but also our charities and most importantly the Wounded Warriors and upcoming junior golfers through the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant,” Dernick said.
The tournament committee provides unique benefits to the juniors and their families with special amenities during the event, using the Presidents’ Day weekend tournament to promote an overall patriotic theme which extends to every aspect of the tournament.
Each year the event features a common thread for a night of activities. In 2014, the theme was “Duck Dynasty,” with camo, laser tag on the driving range, arcade games and a glow-in-the-dark golf ball cannon which launched golf balls more than 300 yards.
“We try to make every effort to have our sponsors, players, their families and guests feel welcome from the moment they walk in the door and hopefully they will leave with memories that will in some way impact their lives,” said Dernick.
The tournament also features the “Great Golf Ball Race,” a Minute-to-Win-It challenge night, dog tags with the players’ names and amazing food prepared by The Club at Carlton Woods.
