The Cleveland County HealthCare Foundation and the Cleveland County Sports Commission will show their support of junior golf in North Carolina by hosting an American Junior Golf Association tournament in 2011. The new partnership will contribute to the overall mission of all three organizations.

“The AJGA is excited to partner with the Cleveland County community,” said Jason Etzen, AJGA Chief Business Officer. “Thanks to the Cleveland County Sports Commission and the Cleveland County HealthCare Foundation, we will be able to provide a great playing opportunity for our members in the North Carolina area.”

Founded in 2007, the Cleveland County Sports Commission’s mission is to develop the sports industry in Cleveland County, foster economic development through sports, build an understanding in the County of the importance of sports and recruit and create sports events that have a positive economic impact on the County.

“The Cleveland County Sports Commission is very excited about hosting a prestigious event like the AJGA,” said Jay Rhodes, Cleveland County Sports Commission Executive Director. “We are thankful to the Cleveland Regional Medical Center and the Cleveland County HealthCare Foundation for their support in making this a reality for our community. We look forward to welcoming the golfers into our community and hope this can become an annual event.”

The Cleveland County HealthCare Foundation also played an instrumental role in bringing the event to the Shelby area. The Foundation’s mission is to enable the community to support programs and services that promote injury prevention, high quality healthcare and wellness for the region.

“Our Foundation Board felt this was an opportunity to support an event that provides young people with a healthy life-long activity choice while supporting the community’s economic development goals,” said Dotty Leatherwood, Vice President and Executive Director of Cleveland HealthCare Foundation. “We are excited to host the first AJGA event for our region.”
