Weekend wrap-up (September 16)

Willie Wood claimed his second career Champions Tour title at the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship, Sept. 14-16, at Kapolei Golf Course. Wood rallied to win with a final round 6-under-par 66 for his second win of the season.

Wood became the first-ever Rolex Junior Player of the Year in 1978, after winning the first AJGA tournament, the 1978 Rolex Tournament of Champions conducted at Inverrary Country Club in Lauderhill, Fla.

Luke Guthrie of Quincy, Ill., finished with a tournament-record 22-under-par to claim his first professional victory at the Albertsons Boise Open in Boise, Idaho, Sept. 10-16. Guthrie, who is finishing his business degree at the University of Illinois, secured his PGA TOUR membership for 2013 by winning the Web.com Tour event.

Guthrie has recorded five top-10 finishes in six starts on the Web.com Tour. This win makes Guthrie the second-youngest winner on the developmental tour this year, two months behind Ben Kohles who won the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational after defeating Guthrie in a playoff.

After a successful junior career highlighted by a third-place finish at the 2007 Rolex Tournament of Champions and a win at the 2007 Rand Graphics-Wildcat Golf Wichita Junior Championship, the Rolex Junior All-American signed with Illinois.

With a record-setting career stroke average of 72.08, Guthrie led the Fighting Illini to four consecutive Big Ten team titles. In 2012, he was named the 2012 Big Ten Player of the Year after winning the individual Big Ten title for the second year in a row. Guthrie turned professional after the 2012 NCAA Championships.
