Sergio Garcia
claimed his
sixth PGA TOUR title at the Wyndham Championship, held Aug. 16-20, at
Sedgefield Country Club. The victory marks Garcia’s first TOUR win since 2008
when he won THE PLAYERS Championship.
Garcia earned several prestigious achievements during his
junior career. In 1995, he became the youngest player to win the European Amateur.
He went on to win the British Boys Amateur Championship (1997) and the British
Amateur Championship (1998). Garcia played in two AJGA events and was named honorable
mention Rolex Junior All-American in 1998 after winning the Marsh Junior at
Apawamis.
AJGA alum Shawn
Stefani claimed his first Web.com Tour victory at the Midwest Classic
presented by Cadillac, held Aug. 16-19. Stefani entered the final hole tied
with fellow alum Russell Henley and
made birdie to win by two strokes and post 17-under-par 267.
The Web.com rookie competed in eight AJGA tournaments
from 1998-2000, recording top-25 finishes in three. Stefani went on to compete
at Lamar University, where he appeared in every tournament his sophomore
through senior years.
Following his victory at the Midway Classic presented by
Cadillac and a T9 finish at the Panama Claro Championship in March, Stefani is
ranked 12th on the money list and is in good standing to earn his
PGA TOUR card this season.
Former University of San Diego player Jake Yount won the 109th Northern California Golf
Association Match Play Championship at Spyglass Hill, besting Eric Ash, 6 and
4. Yount is the first post-collegiate player to win the championship since Matt Bettencourt in 2001.
Yount captured two top-10 AJGA finishes, including a tie for
eighth at the 2005 PING Phoenix Junior at ASU Karsten. During his collegiate
career, Yount posted four top-10 performances, highlighted by a second-place
finish at the Kaua’I Collegiate. In
2008, he was named the WCC Player of the Year after winning medalist honors at
the WCC Championships in a sudden-death playoff.
Matthew Fitzpatrick,
who competed in the 2011 The Junior PLAYERS Championship presented by
TaylorMade-adidas Golf, was
victorious at the 36-hole final of the 86th British Boys Amateur
Championship at Notts (Hollinwell) Golf Club. The 17-year-old from England
defeated Wales’ Henry James, 10 and 8. Since winning the North of England Under
16 Open in 2010, Fitzpatrick went on to capture a top-10 finish at the European
Young Masters. Earlier this year he won the Selborne Salver.
