Preview: Success in Stillwater

On Friday, October 11, the nation’s best junior golfers will begin their quest at Karsten Creek to become the next PING Invitational champion. The field, featuring 44 boys and 27 girls, will showcase their skills on the Oklahoma State University’s home golf course in Stillwater, Okla., in hopes of becoming one among the prestigious list of past PING Invitational champions.

Among the distinguished alumni of the event is 2013 PGATOUR Rookie of the Year Jordan Spieth of Dallas. Spieth is the only two-time champion of The PING Invitational, taking home the trophy in 2008 and 2010. In addition to victories at Karsten Creek, the three-time Rolex Junior All-American and 2009 Rolex Junior Player of the Year also notched wins at two additional events and competed for the West at the 2008 Wyndham Cup going 3-1-0.

Earlier this year, Spieth made waves in the golf industry by becoming the first teenager to win on the PGA TOUR in 82 years at the John Deere Classic. The AJGA alum finished his first professional season at No. 7 in the FedEx Cup standings on the strength of nine top-10 finishes.

In 2012, Gavin Hall of Pittsford, N.Y., earned his second AJGA Invitational victory after defeating Cameron Champ of Sacramento, Calif., in a two-hole sudden-death playoff. In the Girls Division, Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., began her year-long AJGA Invitational success with a victory at The PING Invitational. Following her win in Stillwater, Lee went on to finish in the top 10 at the Polo Golf Junior Classic and win her final three AJGA events, the Rolex Girls Junior Championship, ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior and Rolex Tournament of Champions.

ACE

The Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program provides financial assistance to junior golfers who wish to play in AJGA events. Its goal is to give top-flight golf opportunities to young golfers regardless of financial resources. This program helps to fulfill the AJGA’s mission of developing young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.

What is Leadership Links?

Leadership Links is a new program whereby the AJGA is able to further its mission to help develop young men and women by teaching charitable giving skills and service-oriented practices at an early age. This program gives juniors all the tools necessary to donate their time, talent and resources to local charities and the AJGA youth development programs.
