PGA TOUR
Patrick Reed
went toe-to-toe with fellow AJGA alumnus Jordan Spieth at the Wyndham Championship  and won on the second playoff hole. Both players were tied atop the leaderboard with scores of 14-under-par 266 at the end of 72 holes.

With the victory, Reed collected his first win on the PGA TOUR to hold off 20-year-old Spieth’s quest to become the youngest two-time champion in history. After his five-hole playoff victory at the John Deere Classic  in July, Spieth became the youngest PGA TOUR winner in 82 years.

Two top finishers with AJGA ties were two-time Rolex Junior Player of the Year Brian Harman and John Hu, tied at third with scores of 12-under 268.

In 2008  and 2009 , Spieth played in the FJ Invitational, an AJGA event usually contested at Sedgefield Country Club under many of the same conditions as the Wyndham Championship, and secured finishes inside the top six both times. Reed competed in the event in 2006 and 2007  but both he and Harman, who won the FJ Invitational in 2004  with a 50-foot birdie putt, competed at Forest Oaks Country Club where the event was hosted from 2004-2007.

Huh played in six events and collected four top-20 finishes from 2006-2007.

Reed earned seven top-10 finishes in AJGA competition. He won the 2005 True Temper / David Gossett Junior Championship (pictured during the awards ceremony) and was a member of the 2006 Wyndham Cup East Team. A semifinalist at the 2008 U.S. Amateur, Reed competed at Augusta State University where he became a two-time national champion.

Solheim Cup

Over the weekend, decorated AJGA alumni competed at Colorado Golf Club for a share in the coveted Solheim Cup. European phenom Charley Hull helped Europe to sweep the weekend, 18-10 in the event’s largest margin ever. Hull captured headlines  for defeating Paula Creamer in singles matches before asking for her autograph.

The two also have in common their participation in the PING Junior Solheim Cup: Creamer was the first AJGA player to move from the junior ranks to the professional stage in 2005. Hull competed for PING Junior Solheim Cup Team Europe in 2011 when then-U.S. Team captain Meg Mallon led the American junior girls to retain the title, 12-12.

There were 13 past PING Junior Solheim Cup participants who made the transition to the 2013 Solheim Cup teams including: Creamer, Hull, Morgan Pressel, Brittany Lincicome, Brittany Lang, Jessica Korda, Lexi Thompson, Caroline Hedwall, Azahara Munoz, Anna Nordqvist, Beatriz Recari, Caroline Masson and Carlota Ciganda.

Lizette Salas played with the AJGA from 2005-07 and was a second-team Rolex Junior All-American. Stacy Lewis’ best showing was a T4 finish at the 2002 Aaron’s / Bob Estes Abilene, while Cristie Kerr was the 1995 Rolex Junior Player of the Year. ‘

In other crossover news, former AJGA Tournament Director Courtney Jones was the 2011 American assistant captain for PING Junior Solheim Cup and spent the 2013 season recruiting as the head women’s golf coach at Oklahoma State . AJGA Tournament Sponsor Annika Sorenstam served as the 2013 assistant captain for Team Europe and has sponsored the ANNIKA Invitational  since 2009.

U.S. Amateur

Champion Matt Fitzpatrick defeated fellow AJGA alumnus Adam Ball of Richmond, Va., in the quarterfinals, 4&3. Fitzpatrick played in just one AJGA event, The Junior PLAYERS Championship in 2011, while Ball made appearances in 2007 and 2008, his best finish was T13 at the 2008 Junior All-Star at Petersburg.

After his win at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in July, Scott Scheffler was hot news on Twitter , when he orchestrated a fourth come-from-behind victory in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. Despite an ace on No. 7 in his quarterfinals match against Brady Watt of Australia, Scheffler  fell 1-up, and began his senior year of high school classes this week.
