My Scotty Cameron Moment - August 13, 2008

Each week, the AJGA honors the boy and girl junior golfers who shoot the lowest round during the final tournament round. Each of these players will be presented with one of this year's new Scotty Cameron putter covers in silver or gold. In this feature, we will hear from the players each week who take home this honor and what helped them get there.

AJGA New Mexico Open

"I drove the green on the par-4 No. 6,” said Collin Ward of Amarillo, Texas, who fired a 4-under-par 68 during the final round. “It rolled it up to two feet for eagle."

"My highlight was when I hit it to three feet for eagle on No. 7,” said runner-up Sam Saunders of Albuquerque, N.M., who shot 68 on the final day. “I was struggling early on and then I birdied No. 6. So those two holes jump started my day."

"Honestly, the highlight of my day was when Jared, the starter, used an ESPN voice to get us going,” said Michelle Yang of Los Angeles, who shot a final-round 3-under-par 69 to take home top honors. “I really think that's why I played well. But if you have to have an actual shot, it would be my best birdie putt of the day on No. 5."

Bass Pro Shops/Payne Stewart Junior Championship

"My birdie at No.7 was the moment of the day,” said Adam Carpenter of Little Rock, Ark., who carded a 4-under-par 68 on the final day. “I hit a 9-iron about seven feet and went on to birdie the next hole."

"On No. 14, I three putted from about 10 feet. And then on the par-3 No.15, I overshot the green and into the rough way above the hole,” said Ryan Ennis of Benton, Ark., who also shot 4-under-par 68. “It was an extremely tough shot and I holed it out for birdie. It got me fired up and I went on to birdie 16 and 18 too."

"I was happy that I birdied No.11 because I had been having good scores on the front side and bad on the back,” said Kamryn Ruffin of Pryor, Okla., who carded a 2-under-par 70. “I turned it around today and finally made the turn good. "

AJGA Knoxville Junior Open

“I hit every green today to help me shoot a 68,” said Grant Milner of Knoxville, Tenn., who carded a final-round 4-under-par 68. “I hit my irons better today and overall just hit the ball better.”

“I hit all 18 greens today. I hit the ball the best I have in a long time,” said Keith Mitchell of Chattanooga, Tenn., who shot a final-round 68. ”I hit straight, solid drives and had six birdies on the back nine. That helped.”

“On No. 6, I hit my second shot out of a fairway bunker from 185 yards out to about 15 feet with a hybrid,” said Vanessa Koechli of Greer, S.C., who carded an even-par 72 during the final round.

“On No. 9, I hit a pitching wedge from about 115 yards out,” said Victoria Kiser of Orlando, Fla., who shot a 72 to take home the trophy. “I hit about a foot in front of the hole and ended up about two feet past the hole.”

Emerson Junior Golf Classic

“The whole day was great for me. I didn’t put it in the water and I had no penalties,” said Ryan Tetrault of Orange, Calif., who carded a 2-under-par 70 during the final round. “I was also able to avoid three putts and I made birdies on par-5s. The birdie on No. 18 topped off the great day.”

“I was 3-under-par going into the par-3 17th and I wanted a chance for a birdie. I hit it hard and it got caught on the ridge,” said Danielle Frasier of Encinitas, Calif., who took home the title after carding a 4-under-par 68. “After that, I didn’t want to be aggressive and just wanted to make par. I hit the putt from 30-feet (with my Scotty Cameron putter) and it just kept rolling and rolling and went in.”

Northwestern Mutual Financial Network – Blumberg Group Junior Classic

"On the par-4 No. 18, I sunk a 30-foot putt for birdie," said Michael Miller of Brewster, N.Y., who shot a final-round 3-under-par 69. "I hit a driver, 52-degree and stuck the putt to finish out the round."

"My Scotty Cameron moment was definitely on the par-4 No. 9," said Elizabeth Brightwell who won her first AJGA victory by shooting a 1-over-par 73 during the final round. "I hit a driver off the tee, then sunk my 9-iron approach shot from the fairway to eagle the hole."

Randy Wise Junior Open

“There wasn’t really one hole of the day that made it a good round. I was hitting the ball well all tournament, but my putts weren’t falling," said Michael Coriasso of Grand Blanc, Mich., who shot a final-round 3-under-par 69. "After I birdied Nos. 12 and 13 though, I knew that final round was going to be my best.”
