Carmel Country Club ready for Rolex Girls Junior Championship

Seated in southern Charlotte, N.C., Carmel Country Club is a golf oasis. Recognizable by its signature lamppost-lined driveway, the elite country club is host to the 2008 Rolex Girls Junior Championship. The girls participating in the tournament will experience the championship South Course, one of two 18-hole courses on property. Carmel Country Club has received such honors as being named a Five Star Private Club by Platinum Club of America and was named the No. 13 Private Club in America by Club Leaders Forum.

Carmel Country Club, established in 1960 by a group of entrepreneurial business men, houses 11 tennis courts, two resort style swimming pools and water slides, and a 3,000 square-foot fitness center in addition to the two golf courses.

The all-girls field will tackle the longer course June 10-13 while participating in the Rolex Girls Junior Championship. This course was partially designed by Ellis Maples who added the back nine to the South Course in 1970. The South Course has been redesigned as recently as 1988 when Rees Jones took on the course as his personal design project. The South Course has also hosted other national competitions, such as the U.S. Girls’ Junior in 2006.

Accuracy will play a large role in determining the champion of the 2008 Rolex Girls Junior Championship, as there are bunkers strategically placed throughout the course. The 99 players, ages 12-18, will have a challenge and an excellent experience ahead of them when they reach Carmel Country Club.
