Course Spotlight: Redstone Golf Club

In 2008, the world’s top golfers will once again descend upon Redstone Golf Club in hopes of ascending the Sunday leaderboard at the Shell Houston Open. This year, the Tournament Course will have some special visitors playing a few weeks earlier.

The Houston Boys Invitational at Redstone presented by HP and Administaff is set to tee off Friday on the very same course the pros will be taking on just six weeks later. After numerous years playing on Redstone Golf Club’s Jacobsen-Hardy Course, this tournament will mark the first round the American Junior Golf Association will play on the Tournament Course.

The Rees Jones-designed course opened for play in 2006 and is one of only 11 PGA TOUR venues that are also open to the public. This challenging course boasts tournament yardage that stretches to 7,422 yards from the tips. The course features Mini Verdie greens and TifSport fairways and tees. PGA TOUR Professional David Toms served as course design consultant on this project.

Numerous bunkers and water hazards can be spotted throughout the course, so hitting it straight off the tee will certainly be to the advantage of the players. Players can visit the Redstone Golf Club Web site for hole-by-hole advice from Davis.

“We are excited about having the chance to play this terrific venue,” said Jason Ross, AJGA vice president of tournament development. “It will give our juniors an opportunity to play the same course that the professionals play.”

Adam Scott was the 2007 champion of the Shell Houston Open. Three AJGA alumni were able to tip their caps after victories at the Shell Houston Open. Mike Heinen (1994), Mark Brooks (1996) and David Duval (1998) all took home top billing.
