AJGA Members to Compete in First Evian Masters Juniors Cup

International mixed-team event to take place July 22-23, 2007, at Evian Masters Golf Club

The American Junior Golf Association was asked to select two girls and two boys born in 1993 or later to represent the United States in the first-ever Evian Masters Juniors Cup taking place July 22-23, 2007, at the Evian Masters Golf Club in Evian les Bains, France. The Evian Masters Juniors Cup will immediately preceed the Evian Masters, which brings together the 90 best female professionals in the world.

Conducted by the French Golf Federation and the European Golf Association, the Evian Masters Juniors Cup is an international mixed individual and team competition that will be decided over two 18-hole rounds. A boys’ and girls’ champion will be crowned along with a Nation’s Cup that will be determined by the three best scores each day. Other countries represented in the competition include France, Spain, Japan, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Greece, Scotland and Korea.

“This will be a tremendous opportunity for the four talented junior golfers who earn their way onto this team,” AJGA Executive Director Stephen Hamblin said. “It gives the AJGA great pleasure to help our members see the world and test their games against other top players from around the globe.”

In an effort to remain objective in the selection of the U.S. team, the AJGA will use its Polo Golf Rankings and Performance Based Entry methodology as of May 31 to award playing spots to the most deserving members. The U.S. team will be announced on the AJGA Web site Thursday, May 31.

As of May 9, the top five boys and girls who meet the above criteria are as follows:

Boys:
1. Jordan Spieth, Dallas, Texas (2011)
2. Justin Thomas, Goshen, Ky. (2011)
3. Ryan Simpson, Mechanicville, N.Y. (2011)
4. Asa Manor, Marquette, Kan. (2011)
5. Cameron Palmer, Gilbert, Ariz. (2011)

Girls:
1. Alexis Thompson, Coral Springs, Fla. (2013)
2. Jessica Korda, Bradenton, Fla. (2011)
3. Grace Na, Oakland, Calif. (2011)

5. Kyle Roig, Pembroke Pines, Fla. (2011)

The U.S. Team will be escorted by AJGA V.P./Southeast Regional Director Beth Reuter, who has co-captained the past three U.S. PING Junior Solheim Cup Teams, and Pat Saunders, a long-time AJGA Board Member.

When the competition is complete Monday, July 23, players will be tournament guests during the Evian Masters practice round and will take part in a player meet-and-greet. Additionally, the three players with the lowest aggregate score – boys and girls combined – will take part in the Rolex Pro-Am on Wednesday, July 25.
