2008 Schedule Release

AJGA Announces 2008 Tournament Schedule
New venues highlight the AJGA Schedule for 2008

The Polo Golf Junior Classic set the stage for what is sure to be an exciting 2008 season. The Ginn Reunion Resort served as the new host facility for the season’s first tournament, and there are plenty of other new venues to look forward to in the new year.

Preseason Events
Seven events in 2008

A new event on the AJGA schedule, the GolfWorld Preseason Junior at Furman, will actually be returning to an old venue in 2008. The Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C., is back hosting an AJGA event after a five-year absence. The Henry-Griffitts Junior at Furman was formerly held here, at the home of the Paladins.

Junior All-Star Events
Ten events in 2008

Country Club at Mirasol, new home to the Birks & Mayors Junior All-Star Invitational

The Birks & Mayors Junior All-Star Invitational will find a new home at an old favorite in 2008. After hosting Open events for four years, the Country Club at Mirasol will host its first Junior All-Star event.

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort will host the Junior All-Star at Nemacolin in 2008. From 2003-2006, this was the venue for the PGA TOUR’s 84 Lumber Classic, where golf greats, such as Vijay Singh, took home top honors. The resort has been given top honors by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine.

Open Events
Fifty-two events in 2008

The traditional Easter Weekend events will see two new venues in 2008. While the ReBath Heather Farr Classic will once again be held at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., the Mizuno Junior at Innisbrook will settle in a new location after seven years at Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Ga. The Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club’s Highlands North and Copperhead Courses will be the new track for the East Coast event. Keep your eye on the schedule for complete details regarding the Texas event.

There are plenty of other new AJGA Open venues to put in your schedule. The AJGA Cliffs Championship will be held at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Salem, S.C. Also, the highly ranked Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala., will host the Mobile Junior at Steelwood. Tennessee will see a new event come its way when the AJGA Knoxville Junior Open is held at Tennessee National Golf Club, Aug. 4-7.

Tartan Fields Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, will serve as the host facility for the Nationwide Junior presented by the Memorial Tournament. The Arnold Palmer-designed course hosted the LPGA’s Wendy’s Championship for Children and features some distinct characteristics such as the par-3 No. 8 island green.

The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Long Grove, Ill., is the new site for the Midwest Junior Players Championship. This 16-year-old event will be held at Greg Norman’s first continental U.S. designed course. This par-72 course takes many of its cues from the original Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia, with its challenging design and surrounding natural beauty.

Aurora Country Club in Aurora, Ill., will get its first taste of the AJGA in 2008 when it hosts the AJGA Aurora Junior Championship. In 2009, it will then host the biennial PING Junior Solheim Cup when the event returns to U.S. soil.

Invitational Events
Ten events in 2008

Three of the most exciting Invitational events on the AJGA schedule will be hosted at new venues in 2008. The Rolex Girls Junior Championship will make its way back to the East Coast this year when it heads to Carmel Country Club’s South Course in Charlotte, N.C. Many of the juniors who will take part in this tournament have had the opportunity to play in 2006 when the U.S. Girls’ Junior was held there.

Victoria National Golf Club, new home for the Rolex Tournament of Champions

The Rolex Tournament of Champions will be held at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind., June 30-July 4. The Tom Fazio-designed course is laid out over 418 acres of reclaimed mining land, which help give it the charm and natural beauty that is present today. Named the “Best New Private Course” in 1999 by Golf Digest, and recently ranked No. 22 on Golf Digest’s Top 100 Courses list, Victoria National Golf Club is sure to be the perfect course for this prestigious event.

The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn., will host the 19th annual Canon Cup in 2008. This exciting event pits the 20 best juniors on each side of the Mississippi River in match play competition. The Stanwich Club boasts 7,133 yards from the championship tees. The distinguishing features of the course are the tight fairways, the lakes and streams that come into play on eight holes and the Gordon-style greens, which are canted severely from back to front and are bunkered heavily around the front.

No matter which level of golf you plan on competing in during the 2008 season, you will be given a chance to sample some of the best golf courses across the country. In addition to the many new courses that are noted here, the AJGA will be returning to some of the traditional favorite stops of the summer including Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Dalhousie Golf Club, Moon Valley Country Club, Bellefonte Country Club and Mission Hills Country Club.

Start making your summer plans now to see where you will be playing against the best junior golfers this summer. Continue to check back to the AJGA’s Web site for updates to where the AJGA will be headed this summer!
